What is Iridology?

Iridology (also known as iridodiagnosis or iridiagnosis) is an alternative medicine technique whose proponents claim that patterns, colors, and other characteristics of the iris can be examined to determine information about a patient's systemic health.

Practitioners match their observations to iris charts, which divide the iris into zones that correspond to specific parts of the human body. Iridologists see the eyes as windows into the body's state of health.

Iridology is a study of markings mapped out in the left and right iris.

Sclerology is studying markings in the white part of the eye (Sclera).

Iridology is a method whereby the doctor or health practitioner can tell, from markings or signs in the iris, the reflex condition of various organs and systems of the body. These markings represent a detailed picture of the integrity of the body; its constitutional strength, areas of congestion or toxic accumulations and inherent strengths and weaknesses.

Brief History

I was taught that Iridology was discovered by accident. Literally.

When only a boy of ten years, a Hungarian, Dr. Ignatz von Peczely was playing with an owl in his hometown of Egervar, near Budapest. Unfortunately, he happened to break one of its legs.

I could just imagine his horror as the bird stared back at him. As history has it, he noticed the appearance of a dark stripe in the lower region of the iris of the bird. Eventually, this black streak became a tiny black spot, around which were white lines and shading.

At the age of 36, he became interested in medicine and studied first in Budapest in 1862. In 1864 he went on to Vienna. In 1866 he started practicing in Budapest and published his first book on the iris, Discovery in the Realm of Nature and Art of Healing This work was made known in Germany by August Zoeppritz. Dr. Emil Schlegel of Tuebingen published a book on the results of von Peczely’s
