Introduction
The human body is home to a wide and wild assortment of microorganisms, including viruses. They all have adapted to the human biological system and found ways to survive and thrive. It’s estimated that millions of distinct types of viruses exist, although only about five thousand have been identified and described in detail. Virtually every ecosystem on our planet contains these minute life forms.
Viruses are responsible for a variety of diseases in plants and animals. The ones we’re most familiar with—measles, mumps, and polio—affect only humans, and although they once posed major health concerns, they now occur only incidentally due to the widespread use of vaccinations in children. However, diseases caused by other viruses, such as acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), for which vaccines have not yet been developed, remain ongoing global concerns.
Infectious viral diseases constitute a major health problem worldwide. Controlling these diseases is the focus of constant scientific efforts because of the body’s resistance to known antiviral agents. One very promising approach is the development of antiviral products derived from natural sources, notably herbs.
Traditional herbal medicines are made from naturally occurring, plantderived substances that have had minimal or no industrial processing. They have been used for millennia to treat illnesses within local or regional healing practices. Traditional herbal medicines are presently receiving significant attention in global health approaches and discussions. For example, in China, traditional herbal medicine played a prominent role in the strategy to contain and treat severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and about 80 percent of African populations use some form of traditional herbal medicine. The market for medicinal herbal products around the world exceeds $60 billion annually, and interest in and public funding for international research of traditional herbal medicines is growing.
Herbs contain a wide variety of diverse phytochemicals, and some of these plant chemicals have been found to have natural antiviral properties that can either help stop a viral infection from progressing or shorten the duration or severity of symptoms. Herbal options have ignited the attention of researchers because viruses don’t mutate in the presence of phytochemicals. This means the viruses are far less likely to develop resistance to herbal medicinals, so patients can use them repeatedly to fight a variety of infections and health conditions. Moreover, herbal antivirals generally have fewer or milder side effects than pharmacological options.
Unfortunately, at this time there simply aren’t viable alternatives to vaccines to prevent the vast majority of serious or life-threatening viral infections, and there are still many known viruses (as well as new and emerging ones) for which no vaccine has yet been developed. However, because of a growing public outcry regarding concerns about vaccines and a groundswell of mistrust for the pharmaceutical industries that produce them and the regulatory agencies that oversee them, there’s an urgent call to develop feasible options.
Every body is unique and has its own specific needs, and there will surely be times when it’s not wise for you to treat an illness that’s beyond the capacity of a natural solution. Use herbal antivirals with care, especially when it comes to children or if you’re pregnant or trying to become pregnant, breastfeeding, using alcohol, or taking drugs of any kind, or have been diagnosed with or are being treated for any medical condition or disease. Always consult with your physician or health-care provider when in doubt or before trying an herbal antiviral or natural medicinal.
Understanding Viruses
Viruses, believed to be the most abundant biological entities on Earth, are microscopic organisms that replicate inside the cells of living hosts, including humans and other animals, plants, and bacteria. Viral infections begin when proteins on the surface of a virus particle, known as a virion (a complete virus particle that is the extracellular infective form of a virus), bind to specific receptor proteins on the surface of host cells. The distribution of these receptor molecules on host cells determines the cell preference of the virus. For example, a cold or flu virus will target cells that line the respiratory tract (airway and lungs), and a foodborne virus will target cells in the digestive
