    O

livia has always prided herself on never having had a hangover.

This isn’t because she’s never been out partying; she is just one of the lucky few in her friend group that doesn’t suffer the day after. This is a thing of pride for Olivia, regardless of how stupid it is. She likes to think this trait makes it easier to let off steam; because she can go out at night and still report to work the next morning, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

So, when she wakes up with a pounding in her head, this morning, she’s frightened. She feels a pain behind her eyes, unlike anything she has ever felt. Her legs feel like lead and her chest feels like somebody larger than herself is pressing her down. Everything within her hurts, and her mouth feels dry and strangely salty. Given that she’s strictly a wine drinker these days, it doesn’t make sense as to why she feels this way. Colors burned her eyes. Long moments pass before she can recognize that she’s not even at home. The concrete beneath her body is cold and rough. Everything smells like dumpster sewage; Olivia is confused. She tries to move her legs but they are cold and numbing. Her inner thighs burn and breathing is hard. What happened? Slowly, Olivia notices she is in an alleyway, and apart from the homeless man near the entrance, she seems to be alone. She also notices she’s not in the same physical state she was when she left her house. In fact, the memory of leaving her house earlier is now a little bit fuzzy. She must have gone to the bar, she must have had a drink, but she never would have overdone it. At least her days of getting blackout drunk were behind her...or so she thought.

With great difficulty, she rises to her feet and staggers in the direction of the entrance. On her way in, her left shoulder hits the brick wall, hard. Her teeth feel like they are chattering. Only one of her eyes is open...why is that? Her face feels swollen, she probes her tongue against the side of her cheek and it feels swollen too. Something is wrong.

Miss - hey miss...you alright there?

Olivia’s good eye turns in the direction of the man seated next to a small garbage can fire. She doesn’t know if she is alright. She doesn’t even know where she is...all of her memories are starting to feel hazy, in fact.

Miss...you need ta’ see somebody ‘bout that...Miss, are you?

Olivia wants to answer; she is fine. She wants to say it’s no big deal, but her body begins sliding forward again. Her knees hit the pavement hard and the world around her spins; she must be losing blood from somewhere because everything feels hazy, and she’s woozy but doesn’t feel like she has enough contents left in her stomach to lose. She just wants to go home. Olivia’s eyes shutter close and the next moment she has the capacity to open them again, everything is white. All around her are bright lights and her head doesn’t throb so badly anymore. There is a soft beeping, coming from the side of her, it sounds like
