    Where does your rage come from?

    Is that thing on? Karl motioned toward the micro-recorder on Dr. Heins's desk with an unlit cigarette clamped between his fingers.

    It is, the Doctor said. I play them for the prayer group every Friday night. He smiled, the smile of a hopelessly serious man who wants to show he still has a sense of humor.

    Prayer group?

    I’ll tell you about it some time. Dr. Heins stretched back in his recliner, dark leather that blended into his office like a stone into the earth. The carpet was old shag, the color of wet dust, the walls were press-board made to look like oak, the desk genuine cherry-wood, polished to a glass sheen. You going to smoke that?

    Just hanging onto it until we’re done, Karl said. Didn’t think I was allowed to smoke on the county’s time.

    Dr. Heins pulled a cigar from the inner pocket of his sport coat. I won’t tell if you don’t. The gesture had an air of forethought to it, like his too wide smile, or the signed picture of Rodney Dangerfield on his desk. His professional persona, Dr. Easygoing. Karl thought he was trying too hard.
