About this ebook

What if I told you there is an enemy of your soul, one that you willingly invite into your life on a daily basis? Even though this enemy wants to destroy you, you don’t despise it--in fact, you probably go to great lengths to satisfy its desires.

This enemy wants to monopolize all of your time, money and attention, and will do anything to take over your life. It is time for you to expose this adversary to the light of God’s Word, and make the choice to let this enemy called Self die a slow, quiet death.

Fatal Attraction will inspire you to take an honest look at the power of Self in your life, and make the decision to put your enemy in its place once and for all.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

IAM ETERNALLY GRATEFUL to God my Father for the abundance of grace poured out to me by saving my soul through my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and enabling me to write this book for the work of ministry.

LaShunda Calvert, my wife, for her continuous encouragement, support, patience, and love. I thank God for you and the help that you have been to me. You are the love of my life, and truly God-sent.

My children, Josiah and Mahaliah Calvert, you are the greatest little joys of my life. You both are truly a blessing from the Lord.

My parents, Shari and Reginald Calvert, for your dedication and love toward my brother Deondre and I. You all were there through every hard time and have never given up on me. I love you, and thank you too, big brother, for all your help.

Barbara and Jackie Sweets, my grandparents, for your kindness and love toward me. Thank you for taking me to church, and making me read the Bible.

Shirley Smith, my mother-in-law, for your kindness, honesty, and support of the marriage between your daughter and me. You are truly a Christian woman to be looked up to.

Finally, to the many others who have been placed in my life at a certain time, whom God has used to help shape who I would become. Time and paper would not permit me to place every single name of the people in these acknowledgments, but you know who you are. I am thankful for all that you have done.

    Introduction

    THE ADVERSARIES WE SEE

AN ADVERSARY CAN be described as an enemy, opponent, or one who is opposed to you, hostile, and greatly desires your harm. Adversaries desire to halt your progression and to utterly destroy you in every way possible. We are all so familiar with the words adversary, opponent, enemy, terrorist, and antagonist. Whatever term we choose to use, it doesn’t matter—we know what you’re talking about because these words are used more that barbecue grills on the Fourth of July and more than flowers on Mother’s Day.

Wherever you go, you can’t get away from these synonymous words. For instance, just turn on the television set and you’ll see the word opponent tossed to and fro, and those in opposition to one another competing for some type of prize. In the sports arena opponents go at it for a trophy and the title of champion, and at times it can get so bad that these opponents will get into fistfights or vulgar name exchanging without regard to the other person’s body or feelings. These things happen in basketball, football, and hockey, just to name a few.

I have the privilege of being a head football coach for a middle school team. A few years ago, I overheard an assistant of mine instructing a player that as he is trying to tackle someone, he should grab hold of his ankle and twist it without any concern for the health of the young man who would be tackled in this manner. It didn’t matter if his ankle broke as long as we win. On almost every channel you could turn to there are adversaries; everything is about outdoing anybody else for the sake of some prize whether it be recognition or material things. People are in opposition to be the next best chef or designer or the next top model or Sunday’s best, American Idol, America’s Next Best Dance Crew, and there are many more that can be named just in the arena of television, but I think you get my point.

In the political arena the term terrorist is used greatly for those who are in opposition against America and will desire the harm of anyone who would be called American. Not too long ago a terrorist attack took place on American soil in Arizona—Tucson, to be exact. A young twenty-two-year-old male opened fire at a mall, injuring many people and killing six. However, the worst part about it was that this terrorist wasn’t from another country, but he was right at home here in America.

Ask anyone to walk alone and unprotected in the savannah and grasslands of Africa, and they would look at you crazy, for they know that there are many adversaries that would desire their destruction, like the lion, hyena, and cheetah, to name a few. Ask a fellow visitor at the zoo to jump into the cages with the gorillas or to pet the polar bears, and they would probably desire to knock your lights out. Ask the greatest swimmer in the world to jump into the Nile River and swim to the other side and he would pay you for the laugh, for that river is infested with huge intimidating crocodiles that are able to shred your flesh like a meat grinder and crush your bones with pressure as great as pounds per square inch.

    All those animals that
