Chapter 1
1809 : Diary of a Young Girl
19Sept1809-Dear Diary-My name is Lavinia Whitfield. I am Fourteen years old as of today. I am writing in you, my new diary, which Mama and Papa got me for my birthday. Mama says it’s very important for a woman of my status to learn to keep good records. Mama says that she has kept a diary since she was six years of age and learned how to write. It has helped her remember things she might have forgotten through the years if they had not been written down. I hope that I can be as dedicated as Mama in writing also. I want to be as efficient and capable as her. It has been so difficult with Papa away at war. Mama has all the worries of taking care of the estate, the people and making sure that she is well-represented in London. It has been such a strain on her and I can tell she is tired. She can also be a bit grumpy with us when she is worried.
Why, just yesterday Edward, our groundskeeper, came to Mama telling her that some of the cattle had gotten out of the fencing and one was poached by someone. That means there is money lost, I suppose, which in this time of war is very disturbing. Mama was so upset by this that we all had to go to our rooms and have supper brought to us. This has happened a lot lately. Mama says that the strain of all this work is too much and she needs to find ways to bring money into the estate, not out. I wasn’t supposed to hear any of the conversation, but Mama forgot about me in the drawing room when she was talking to Edward about all of this in the study. I have learned to be quiet so that I can hear what is going on. Mama and Papa were talking about looking for a proper suitor for me before he was called away. I don’t want to leave here and go off with some horrible man as his new wife. I want to stay and help Mama until Papa can come home and be with us. I miss him so much. It’s only been six months since his departure, but every day goes on forever. I miss our rides in the park and the fishing at the river. I would take my book and read to Papa while he fished. It was so peaceful and now there is war. I hate war. I hope all those Frenchmen die horrible deaths for taking my sweet Papa away across the Channel. It would serve them right to die
