Chapter 1
The sun was warm and bright in the sky as puffy clouds moved slowly on the warm afternoon breeze. The earth was finally pliable after the cold winter and ready for planting. Trees were leafing out and a bright green was spreading out around the countryside as Spring woke up the growing world. Sadie wiped her face and pushed her red curls away as she knelt in the garden planting seeds that would feed the growing family. She looked out toward the field where her father and Daniel were encouraging the huge horse to drag the plow through the hard dirt. She turned the other way and saw the dusty road that crossed between the cabins of the six families who had come to this beautifully rich place nestled next to a creek in the Ohio Valley. She sighed and wondered what everyone back in Quarryville was doing.
She heard, rather than saw, the horse slowly coming out of the woods past her family’s home—clop-clop
in the hard dirt of the road. Then the horse appeared—a beautiful roan with a man hanging around the neck of the horse, the reins dragging on the ground. As Sadie, watched, the horse made its way to the center of the village where it stopped and looked around, as if more movement would hurt the rider on its back. Then, almost on cue, the rider slowly slid off the horse onto the ground as Sadie hollered out for help and ran to the man’s side. People came from all around, mostly women and young children, as the men were out in the fields. Unable to move him themselves, Sadie’s mother, Hannah, took control and told one of the young boys to go out to the fields and find some of the men to help move him into the house. Hannah gently moved the man to his back and those standing around gasped softly. His right shoulder revealed a big hole clearly from a gunshot, and there was blood both dried and fresh around the wound. He looked young, but it was hard to tell with the paleness of his skin and the blood-soaked clothes.
About that time, the men-folk came running up. Samuel, who was the lead Elder, pursed his lips as he took in the young man lying on the ground, but motioned for
