Pre- Colonization

Argentina, the second largest country in the continent of South America borders Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil. Nested near the Andes Mountains it’s a country of breathtaking scenery and a complicated yet rich history making it a jewel of one of the most southernmost land masses in the world.

Human habitation of Argentina can be tracked back as far as 11000 BCE. These early traces of humanity in the country were found in the Santa Cruz region in Southern Patagonia. Little more than cave drawings and archaeological evidence, not much is known of this native Argentinean population.

The first groups of humans in Argentina fit one of three categories common in the Pre-Common Era. Farmers dominated Cordoba Sierra, Cuyo, Mesopotamia and the Northwestern Region. This was while hunters and harvesters were found in abundance in Chaco, Pampa and Patagonia.

Those two groups of early Argentineans were very different but both integral parts of the earliest days of humanity in the region. The farmers lived more sedentary lives, and often were born and died in the same place they lived out their days. The hunters and harvesters had the tendency to move, to roam and live a nomadic life necessary to track and hunt prey.

Four main separate and distinct indigenous groups lived in and competed over resources in Pre-Common Era Argentina: the Pampas (aka Hets), the Tehuelches (aka Aonikenk), Selknams and Mapuches. Not all of the native groups in Argentina were free, however. That was particularly true in the northwest part of the country where they were under the control of the mighty Incan Empire.

The Pampas of Argentina were named after the region they originated from. Consisting of vast plains where modern day Buenos Aires is located, their home was perfect for the use of and reliance on horses. They were the great horse masters of the region, using them for everything from aiding in agriculture to great weapons of war.
