Trinity and Jeff - Kate Hill

    together.

    Prologue

    Massachusetts, 1878

Four dead men, their clothes and flesh dirty from the grave, attacked Jude Wild. His brown hair tousled and muscles straining beneath his torn, bloodstained white shirt, he fought with captivating strength. Having served in the military for several years, Jude still looked and moved like a warrior. Armed with combat skills and the supernatural gifts of a warrior witch, Jude quickly disposed of two of his demonic attackers. Their skulls split beneath his hatchet. He dragged steel out of bone in time to duck a blow from one of the remaining corpses. Just days ago, these four brothers had died in a tragic carriage accident. Now, these poor, recently awakened monsters retained no memory of their mortal lives. They had no emotions -- save those of hate imposed upon them by the master demon who had brought them back to life. Even that demon probably answered to another, more powerful one. The chain no doubt linked back to Satan himself. The world of demons was more complex than most people imagined, but Ruth Wild had no time to ponder demonic hierarchy.

One particularly skilled -- or lucky -- corpse grabbed hold of Jude’s hatchet. In the moonlit graveyard on the outskirts of Boston, they struggled for possession of the weapon. The other remaining corpse leapt at Jude from behind, but Ruth aimed her gift in its direction. The dead man burst into flames. Jude wrenched the hatchet from his foe and kicked the corpse backward. He swung the hatchet and half severed the creature’s neck. His second blow fully decapitated the corpse. By then the body that Ruth had set aflame lay in a smoldering heap.

Panting, the hatchet still clenched in his fists, Jude turned to Ruth with blazing eyes and strode toward her. I thought I told you to stay home with the children.

Ruth glanced at the bodies. Then she turned to him, her gaze and tone calm though she resisted the urge to shake him. You seemed to need help.

Woman, I’ve put down far more than four reanimated corpses in my life.

    Often with my help.

His expression softened. Ruth, we’ve discussed this. Now that we have children, it’s best that only one of us risks our life at any given time.

She smiled and brushed a lock of damp hair from his sweaty forehead. You’re so handsome, especially when you’re angry.

Don’t try to distract me. He lowered the hatchet to his side and wrapped his free arm around her waist.

I’m not. Your uncle is with the children, so they’re safe. I sensed you were in danger, and I won’t ignore that, Jude. We’ve fought together for too long.

I know, but be reasonable, Ruth. It’s not fair to the children.

And how is it fair that since we made the decision to risk only one of us at a time, only you have gone to do battle against the supernatural? I’m chained to the house, doing research and recording our experiences for posterity. I have as much power as you, Jude.

Probably more, he said under his breath, but she heard him.

    Excuse me?

We’ll talk about it later. Right now I need to return these corpses to their graves. Come morning, no one will be any wiser about what happened, although if I’d arrived sooner, I could have stopped the resurrection demon while he was desecrating these graves.

Unlikely. Your cousins said he’s already left Boston and is heading west. They believe this last group of corpses was just a distraction. They’ve already started tracking him, so we probably won’t hear from them until they’re able to stop somewhere to send a letter.

Jude sighed. I don’t like this. For a while it seemed like attacks such as this were lessening in these parts.

Ruth smiled sadly and slid her arms around his neck. Evil is always around, my love, no matter how we might wish otherwise.

Jude held her gaze for a tender moment before glancing toward the two men approaching with shovels.

Help has arrived, Jude said. They’ll assist me in putting the dead back to rest. Then I’ll meet you at home. I’m feeling lively. Killing demons usually does that to me.

I know, and I’ll be waiting.

    * * *

Jude arrived just a few hours before dawn, covered in dirt and sweat, but with a familiar gleam in his eyes.

Ruth had a bath ready for him. He stripped off his clothes and she collected them for the morning wash.

He sank into the warm water and leaned his head back, closing his eyes. Ruth tugged a stool behind the tub and sat, sliding her arms around Jude’s neck. She nuzzled his hair and fondled his ear with her teeth and tongue while caressing his broad shoulders and lean, hard chest. Groaning, Jude leaned back farther to better enjoy her caresses.

How many more children did you say you wanted? Jude’s husky voice sent a thrill through Ruth.

As many as you give me.

He chuckled and sat up to wash quickly.

I’ll see you in bed. Ruth kissed his cheek before gliding out of the washroom. She checked their sleeping son and daughter before returning to the bedroom she and Jude shared.

No sooner had she discarded her nightdress, brushed her hair, and climbed into bed than Jude pounced on her. Naked, he loomed above her with glistening eyes and a hungry grin.

It’s good that you didn’t plan on going to work until later tomorrow. Ruth grinned. Apparently you’re about to expend what energy you have left after fighting and burying corpses.

Don’t worry about my energy, love. Right now, it’s boundless. He covered her mouth in a passionate kiss.

Closing her eyes, Ruth thrust her tongue against his. Jude’s freshly washed hair and still-damp skin made her shiver, but their deep kisses and frenzied caresses soon warmed her.

Stretched out beside her, Jude tossed the sheet off her and ran a big, warm hand over her hip and thigh. He gently cupped her breast and rolled his thumb over her taut nipple, making it tingle. Ruth’s heartbeat quickened and she drew a deep breath. When he slid lower to capture her nipple between his lips, she gasped and clutched his head, holding him closer.

Jude licked and sucked her nipple while caressing her buttocks. He slid his hand between her legs and pressed the tip of his thick finger into her.

You’re so wet already, Jude breathed.

I’ve been wet for you since I watched you fight those corpses.

He laughed. That sounds wrong, somehow.

But you know what I mean.

I know, my beautiful, fiery witch. He covered her mouth in another demanding kiss. That worked well, for Ruth was just as hungry for him.

She curled her fist around his hard, satin-skinned cock. She loved its thickness and strength and she could scarcely wait to feel it deep inside her.

Oh, Ruth, he murmured against her lips. More.

She laughed softly and pumped him. When she slid her finger beneath his hood to caress his most sensitive flesh, he gasped and jerked his hips.

I want you so much, my love, he panted.

    Take me, my love.

Jude covered her with his big, hard body. A hand braced on either side of her head, he stared into her eyes. Sharing a look at such an intimate moment seemed so right. She doubted she could feel this way about anyone else. He filled her completely -- physically and emotionally.

He thrust slowly at first, drawing out almost to the tip and then gyrating into her hot, quivering pussy.

Oh, Jude, she whispered, her fingers tight on his shoulders. She wrapped her legs around him, loving the way his chest hair tickled her breasts. Their hips moved as one.

He thrust faster and harder. Neither wanted to wait much longer. All night, Ruth had been thinking about making love with him. Now that the moment arrived, she wanted it to last, but her patience evaporated.

Both struggled to be quiet, but they couldn’t help the random grunts and groans that escaped as they neared the end. Finally Ruth burst in a powerful climax. It triggered Jude’s and he stiffened, pinning her beneath his hot, damp body. He slid a bit to the side before collapsing, half draped over her. Ruth relaxed, thoroughly satisfied.

My goodness, those are beautiful memories. Jude’s thoughts and warmth wrapped around Ruth’s spirit.

They had been dead for many years, but their spirits were inseparable. They remained entwined in the afterlife, watching over their descendants. While alive, Ruth and Jude had placed a blessing on land they had purchased in New Hampshire. There they had built a cabin. The blessing had held strong, and helped many members of the Wild family find their soulmates. So far, any member of the Wild family who met their mate on that land had lived happy lives together, but the Wild family land held even deeper secrets and deeper magic. Hopefully one day soon, their descendants would realize it.

It’s nice that we can revisit our memories like this, Jude continued. A benefit to being dead, I guess.

We had such a happy life, difficult as it was at times fighting demons. Evil withdrew for a time, and our family’s magic dwindled -- at least as far as witch warrior powers.

Ours wasn’t the only family who noticed the change.

I know. Now, so many years later, strong evil is returning with a vengeance.

Yes, but our descendants, the Wild Witches, will meet the challenge. Already their powers are growing stronger and more dangerous. The marriage of our Mysti and Starr Johanson brought the Wilds together with his powerful and well-trained family. Now the Wilds are about to welcome another powerful ally.

"He’s already been an ally of our family for
