Jade Twilight

I'm a married, stay at home mom, with two little ones. I enjoy being outside, gardening hiking and playing with my daughter. When I'm not doing any of those things I'm reading or writing. Mostly paranormal, fantasy, western erotica/ romance, but the limit is my imagination. Which is a little warped so you never know what'll pop out.

    Prologue

Alex parked her bicycle in the rack next to the history building’s entrance. She’d been helping Professor Harris with his work for the last month or so. A crew he’d worked with in Scotland had discovered a small grave with all sorts of artifacts. She’d volunteered for extra credit but had become fascinated with the work and stayed on past her two week period.

Walking down the hall she gave a smile to a couple other students. Knocking on the door to Professor Harris’s office, she gently pushed it open after getting no reply. The office looked like it always did, as if a hurricane had hit. Papers, books, and different artifacts were scattered all over the small room. Except now the center of the room had been cleared, and a circular inscription was marked on the floor.

From the back of the room, Professor Harris called, Alex, I’m so glad you’re here. Do me a favor before you get settled. Pick up that necklace and book on my desk, then stand in the center of those markings.

Frowning, she walked over to his desk. Sitting on top of a leather-bound tome was a silver dragon emblem in the shape of two dragons forming a heart, on a silver chain. Is this from the dig?

Ah yeah, just slip it on and open the book to the marker. The professor came out of the small closet he’d been rummaging in, and walked toward her.

Shouldn’t you have someone more experienced with this sort of stuff do this?

Why? He grinned at her, his white hair sticking up in all directions. You’re just as qualified as any PhD in this place. Besides, your Gaelic’s better than mine.

Okay, she sighed. Let me just take off my coat and set down my bag.

No, no, no. He took the necklace and slipped it over her head, then shoved the book in her hand, pushing her toward the center of the markings. Just humor an old man.

′Kay, she muttered hesitantly. Granted, she was used to Harris’s quirks, but for some reason this didn’t feel right. Then again, what could happen? It was just some old mumbo jumbo, so she’d humor him.

Stepping into the center of the circle, she read over the words, then raised her hand over her head as directed by the script. The text wasn’t exactly Scottish Gaelic, but looked like a combination of Gaelic and English. Drawing a deep breath, Alex began to read the words out loud.

At first nothing happened, not that Alex expected anything to happen, but then strange blue and silver light began to swirl around her. As it began to swirl faster, she tried to stop speaking but couldn’t. Seconds later the world tipped, and she lost consciousness.

    Chapter 1

With a groan, Alex rolled over. God, she had one hell of a hangover.

Her eyes flew open as she realized that one, she hadn’t gone out last night, and two, she was lying on grass. Sitting up, she looked around. Trees surrounded her, and she sat in a small clearing with the leather tome beside her. A brook bubbled off to her left, birds twittered in the trees; higher up there was a scream from something she’d never heard before.

Keep calm, Alexandria Konner. You are not the type who freaks out, Alex told herself, following it up with a couple deep breaths. Okay, so what happened? The last thing she remembered was being in Professor Harris’s office with the necklace, the book and the lights. Could it have been some sort of trick? Harris somehow drugged her and then left her out here after... No, he wouldn’t have.

She ran her hands over her clothes. They weren’t screwed up and her messenger bag was still over her shoulder. So that was out.

Her train of thought was interrupted by a large bird landing a few feet away. Jumping to her feet, she moved to see it better. It was like no animal she’d ever seen before. Alex’s eyes widened as she got a good look at the creature.

No. It can’t be, she breathed.

A small blue and green dragon hissed at her, an arrow protruding through the thin membrane of its wing. Angrily it belched a stream of fire at a small bush nearby. Biting her lip, Alex removed her bag and coat, not taking her eyes off the lizard. She hoped to catch it and remove the arrow. Maybe, if she was lucky, she could bandage it and not get burnt to a crisp in the process. If it decided to puff out a column of fire, her flimsy windbreaker was going to melt.

Opening her bag, she pulled out her Swiss army knife and sliced off a strip of her t-shirt. It would make an okay bandage in a pinch. So far, the little dragon was just watching her warily. Okay, little guy. Here’s what’s going to happen.

The dragon cocked its head as though listening.

Alex continued talking in a calm voice while picking up her coat again. I’m going to wrap you in this so you can’t claw me and won’t hurt yourself. Then I’m going to break that arrow in half and pull it out of your wing.

Slowly she moved toward it. The little creature stopped hissing as though it understood, but still looked wary. She sighed as it allowed her to wrap it in the coat and tied the sleeves in order to keep it from flapping its other wing.

Okay, got that over. Now we have to do the hard part and get the arrow out. Gotta tell ya I never thought I’d be doing this. After taking a couple deep breaths, she proceeded to break the shaft of the
