Laughter, the distinct sound, resonates in Eli’s ears.

He shoves the black leather chair he’s on away from the desk, then rises. With long strides, he exits his office, then makes his way down the hallway that leads to the bar.

The last customer left the building a little over thirty minutes ago. And now, at closing, only a third of the lights remain on. At the other end of the hallway, shadows snake up the walls, down the corridor, and across the ceiling. Voices carry in the distance and his inner wolf listens.

Down in the pit, Tessa Johansson kneels on the seat of a booth, wiping down the table. The blue skirt she’s wearing creeps upward, then swishes around the back of her bare thighs. Next to her, the new girl, Jasmine Martinez, rearranges the condiments. Their conversation - hushed and whispered - does little to keep the content private from the ears of his inner wolf.

Dominic Arnold, one of Eli’s bouncers, sits on a stool at the bar. He’s waiting for the girls to finish. The man’s eyes track Jasmine’s every move. For the past two weeks, the waitress and Dominic have been exchanging glances.

As the owner of the bar, Eli doesn’t impose strict rules regarding relationships between employees, as long as the interaction doesn’t cut into profits. Truth be told, how could he enforce a policy, he’d never follow himself. Hell, half the women he fucks are his subordinates or customers. Besides, he has to enforce enough rules as the Alpha of the Black Foot Clan. So, he prefers to run his business with a less stringent model.

Thoughts of the recent attacks on Sadie and Ava cross his mind. The Kweo clan, in each instance, had a hand to play. But they’re keeping a low profile, lurking in the shadows to avoid detection. They haven’t made a public move since Tessa’s father’s murder, at least, not one that would violate the treaty in place between the different houses or tie back to them. But with each passing day, the Kweo numbers climb. And large groups of stray lycans continue to migrate. And many of them have found their way to Kensington Cove. So, it’s only a matter of time before things come to a head.
