    Chapter One

I breathe deeply, staring at the tattoo shop across the street. My work in my hands, the sign staring at me. Tattoo Artists Wanted it reads. I breathe. I need this job. Gran is getting worse and I need the money to take care of her. I had been doing decently tattooing people in their homes. My clients liked me.

I don't know why, it's not like I'm an interesting or good person. The wolf whispers in my ear. I try to shut down the intrusive thoughts.

You don't have to go in there, the wolf whispers.

The doctor says it will be good for me, I tell the wolf.

You aren't even that good, it's okay to let's go home curl up in bed, the voice tells me.

I shake it off. I am a good artist.

You really aren't, it tells me.

I close my eyes and push back the voice looking at the stop sign again and I start towards it. Swallowing my fear. I can't tell I am walking, it mostly just feels like my body is moving without me having to do anything. Like I'm drifting along. I hear the familiar tinkle of a bell as the door opens and the wolf in my ear whispers you shouldn't be doing this. He won't like your work. You’re a fraud. Give up now, it's not too late. Just run away. But then it is too late for me to run because he sees me.

Hi, he says, six feet tall and all Hispanic. He grins at me, asking, What can I do for you?

I say nothing for a moment, frozen in fear.

Run, run, the wolf tells me.

No, I say to the wolf, but it is out loud I wince as the wolf tells me just how stupid I am, how I will never get the job.

Job, I say, sounding like I am a child, I take a deep breath and say all at once. Hi, I'm Scarlet. I'm here to apply for the tattoo job. Here is my portfolio.

Cool. Can you do an interview now? he asks and I panic.

Now? I am unprepared right now.

I got this far. I swallow and nod.

Cool. Follow me, he says. I'm Nico, by the way. I have been managing here for about a year and a half, since my last artist did some shit that I am not at all happy with. Got himself arrested. Anyway, so I am looking for a new artist to fill his shifts. We have clients on rotation and Adam and I have our schedules filled, so we need someone ASAP to pick up the slack. So that is a little about this place, tell me about yourself.

Um, I say, unprepared. My mind is screaming at me. I take another deep breath and start. Well, I have been drawing art since I was a kid. My Gran suggested that I get into tattoos a couple of years ago; she got me my first piece when I was 16. I lift my sleeve and show him the two skulls surrounded by roses. She thought it would be a good outlet for me, and I haven't gone back since. Um, here is my portfolio. I have done a bunch of different people's tattoos mostly just whatever, but now I wanted something more stable.

Cool, nice, he says, taking the portfolio. He starts flipping through it as my brain screams at me.

Stupid, stupid, stupid, never going to get hired, dumb, stupid bitch.

So to be honest, I have never had to do an interview before, but you seem chill. So if you want to do a quick tattoo on my arm as a reference for your skill, then I would totally hire you, Nico says.

I stare at him a moment. Really? That is all?

Okay well yeah I guess I should ask, where did you learn? Do you have certifications?

um, okay well when I was 18 I went to Vancouver for 6 months to take a course at ARS institute of Arts where they had a tattooing course, I mostly did it in my spare time and on friends but I was certified to work as a tattooist in Canada. It’s in my profile. Um I’ve never really worked a real job I guess
