About this ebook

In the near future, one of the last few light-eaters would be born. Shortly after that, the world was never the same again.

When 'eating light' becomes the difference between a long life and a calculated death, Adriela counts herself lucky to be among the few who don't have to subsidize her Vitamin D deficiency with government-issued supplements. However, the promise of bountiful years soon proves to be more of a burden than a blessing.

After being accepted into a program designed to help the dying population who can't absorb UV light, Adriela soon learns that her new job, company, and society is held together by two nimble strings; lies and deception.  As she navigates the halls of her new workplace, she stumbles across wicked schemes, lifetimes of lies, and a dark future aimed at everyone's head. She must either expose the plots that perpetuate a deadly cycle or watch as her family and the rest of humanity suffer for eternity.

Who would think that light could be such a heavy meal?

    CHAPTER ONE

Adriela flashed her left wrist on the illuminated screen and watched as the black barcode tattooed on her skin momentarily glowed bright green. Numbers appeared below the lines, and a ten-minute countdown began. She shuffled to the side to give the next passenger space to activate his journey.

As she moved along, she noticed that the man was a little older, probably late thirties, but she could see his back was already beginning to hunch slightly. He had done a good job of combing over his hair to conceal the sizeable chunks where lost hair had failed to grow back, but he wasn’t really fooling anyone.

The man looked up sharply and Adriela moved away, embarrassed at having been caught staring. She hastily made her way towards the row of orange, cubed transporter pods parked in their docking stations.

Are you sure you don’t need me to come with you? Tarun’s voice came through her earbuds, drawing her back into the conversation she had paused.

I think I should be able to handle a blood test all by myself at twenty-nine, she replied.

I know, but you’ve never been good with needles. She registered the note of concern in her brother’s voice.

I’ll be fine. The worst they could say is I have five years, she reasoned as she settled into a pod to wait out her time,

I wouldn’t be able to bear the thought that I’m supposed to outlive you. Adriela smiled sadly even though she knew he couldn’t see it. Tarun’s twenty-year life forecast was decent and they had both been relieved when he had received it three years ago.

Seriously, T, don’t worry. I’ll let you know once I’m done.

Her countdown was almost up so she ended the call and sat back. A low humming began to sound all around her as the pod booted up. She closed her eyes, waiting for the familiar, yet still uncomfortable weightless sensation that she always felt in her stomach whenever she used one of the high-speed transporters.

The journey from her home district to the government test centre was estimated to
