The Merge 2
Prologue
Life has never been simple for me, and it never will again.
Chapter 1
I was being held captive, alongside the one I loved. Held as prisoners, enduring what we needed to in order to survive The Merge. I sometimes wonder if my gifts have stolen my life from me or given me one. My future was uncertain for so many reasons. I always wondered if there was more out there for me, and if I would ever have access to that something more. Most people think that human development can't be reformed, or even be evolved, but I beg to differ.
I am the only female to have survived an experiment that spans back over seventy years. The Merge has opened my eyes to more possibilities and dangers than I could ever have imagined. But, was this path really my destiny?
Was being controlled by someone who considers us to be free really deemed as living? What was being free? I wasn't sure anymore. I have so many questions that have yet to be answered, but I can’t despair. I stake my life that those answers will come about, and I will one day reclaim what is mine: my truth. Whatever that may be.
One way or another, I will emerge from all this, stronger and more capable in my existence. I am no longer the young and naive seventeen-year-old I once was when this whole thing started. I am a woman now… a woman who refuses to be broken.
My name is Kaitlyn, and I am a part of a team that consists of multiple test subjects – most of who have endured more time under Mr. Kalet’s leadership and his bylaws than I have. Our team consisted of thirty-eight men and one female. We were held captive here under the very watchful eye of Mr. Kalet. A man who I considered to be pure unadulterated evil. Definitely one you don’t want to piss off or provoke.
Most of my time in the community
he stays hidden from us. But, we know he’s there, watching and waiting for one of us to provoke him, to stray from his good nature, if that side even truly existed.
The rules here never change, but there are always more rules being added. Our lives are structured here, even more so than before The Merge. The strict laws raised inner doubts and fears inside my head, that’s haunted my dreams at night. I so often have nightmares, wondering what’s out there waiting for us.
Were there people waiting and hoping to see us fail in our pursuits, or were there people who existed solely to ensure that we failed by eliminating us? We find ourselves submerged in chaos that we didn’t build or create. I wanted to think positive, but the position that we now lived in didn’t leave much room for dreams, only nightmares. Which had somehow, undoubtedly, became our new reality.
No matter what was happening or not happening, the aura of our lives could be defined in only one way. Scary. I didn’t recognize myself anymore. I used to know the difference between what was good and what was bad, now I’m not sure anymore of what I know.
Such trivial things no longer mattered. In my life now, nothing really mattered beyond the survival of myself, my love, and my team. My team consisted of thirty-eight men who roamed the grounds patiently waiting for either an assignment, more training, or a seminar. I had yet to go out on an assignment. Todd, Wade, and Isaac, who had accompanied me here years ago, hadn’t gone on one either.
Us, four, were still deemed as newbies and were always told that we had a lot more training to endure before we could receive our very first assignment outside the grounds. Which really meant that Mr. Kalet doesn’t think we’re ready to face whatever it is that’s out there quite yet. He was a man who didn’t take too many chances, and with us, why would he?
Word around the compound is that us four are invaluable to him. We were an elite team whose DNA origins created those thirty-eight men who exist now to serve him. This protected us in a way, but also made us targets. We had no choice but to be compliant with Mr. Kalet and his bylaws. But, that was never enough, he’d always want more. It’s not love that he craves or values as far as us four are concerned. It’s complete control which equates to power.
Being valuable to him is scary all in itself, and having your DNA used and replicated is another form of freaky. Out of us four, I am the calmest, I think, regarding our new environment. The others put on a good front, but I can read and sense their true thoughts, and they are completely terrified of Mr. Kalet…and of me.
Soon after we arrived here, Kalet’s team discovered that they all had reached their full measure of holding and sustaining the energy that’s coursing throughout their bodies. Todd, Isaac, and Wade’s
