Many times in my life I have thought about writing a book, but I was too busy with life; raising kids, being a wife, mother, daughter with very little time for anything else. I took several kids into my home to help them. One time I took in three little boys from two years to six years whose mother had passed away, but they needed someone, as their dad worked. Another time there were two boys that had run away from home and were trying to live in a car at a local mechanic's shop. Late in life, I was told I have a heart disease and would have to take it easy. That was difficult as I had aways been busy; but one day I sat down at my computer and started writing A Light In The City. It must have been how I felt about people. Wanting to help them. I just wrote. No question about what it was going to be-—I just wrote.

Thanks to Charlette Campbell for helping me with this book. She is a wonderful editor as well as a good friend and was always there when I needed encouragement. Her knowledge as an editor and what should not be in the book was a great help.

While Diana was traveling to the city, she kept thinking, There must be an answer to my problems. Everyone has problems, for some reason mine just seem worse. When she got out of bed that morning, she decided to go to the city to shop. She really didn’t need anything, but needed to get away from her home and all the things bothering her. She called and made a reservation for a hotel room. She thought if she had time to reflect on her life, maybe she could come to decisions as to what to do with it.
She was thinking about the last few years and why she had made some of the decisions changing her life. Diana was a very pretty woman, with big green eyes and light brown hair falling around her shoulders in a page boy style. She had an interesting face and, looking at her, you realized she was aware of everything in her world.
When she was fifteen years old, her grandfather passed away. She had not seen him since she was about two years old as her mom and she lived in California. Mom didn’t get along with him, and she never took Diana to visit him.
Diana’s dad, Kensington, had gone to Vietnam and never came back. Her mom was told by the army that he was missing in action. For all of Diana’s life she never heard anything about him from her mom. Her mom acted like he didn’t exist. Whether she was hurt, angry, or scared Diana didn’t know but she just couldn’t ask questions about him as her mom would get very angry. When her grandfather tried to talk to her mom about his boy, she got very angry at him.
After many months of quarreling with him, she moved away to start another life without any of the family. It was just mom and Diana, and they moved to New York. Diana’s mom, Alice, was a very good bookkeeper and she got a job with an insurance agency that covered people across the country. After a few months when a lawyer contacted Alice about her father-in-law’s death, she told him she didn’t want anything to do with him. The lawyer didn’t want to talk to Alice about the inheritance, just Diana. Alice said no, she wouldn’t allow it. The lawyer decided to keep the inheritance for Diana until she reached adulthood. Then he would give it to her. Diana’s grandfather had thought such a thing might happen, and he had made sure that it would be given to Diana when she was eighteen. Alice never told Diana about her grandfather’s death or about the inheritance. The years went on and Diana lived a life just like any other teenager. She went to school and she dated sometimes, but not often. When Diana graduated from high school, there was a boy she was dating. His name was Justin, and he convinced Diana that he was in love with her. Diana really liked Justin as he was attentive and never let her want for anything that he could give to her. They spent most of their time together. When the time came to go to college, Diana knew where she wanted to go. But Justin wanted to get married, and they could go as a married couple. Diana thought they were too young and did not want to get married yet. She tried to talk to Justin about it, but he didn’t want to wait; then she broke up with him. He was devastated. He decided that she would change her mind. He wanted her, and he would not leave her alone. He started stalking her. Diana didn’t know it for a while, but eventually she figured it out and the next time she saw Justin, she walked up to him and told him, I am going to call the police the next time you follow me.
Whenever Diana was alone in the city, she would see Justin. She called the police and Justin was issued a protective order. Justin kept stalking her. Finally, Diana decided to leave New York without Justin knowing she had left.
Diana made a trip to the airport and got a reservation for a flight to LA. Her flight was in two weeks. She made the reservation under a different name, as she was able to borrow an ID from a person she knew. Justin followed her to the airport to watch her. But when she left, she had papers in her hand as if she was going to apply to become a travel agent. The next day she went to the airport again, applying for a job as a stewardess. Each day she went to the airport to apply for a job. Finally, Justin quit following her to the airport when she went there, thinking that she was only looking for a job. When Diana went to the airport on the day of her reservation, she took a flight to LA. She knew Justin wouldn’t be following her. She knew her grandfather was living there. She thought that maybe grandfather would be ok with her even though her mom didn’t get along with him. She was hoping that if she was gone, Justin would not search for her.
When she got to LA, she went to a modest hotel and, after getting settled there, she went to the address of her grandfather’s home. When she got to the house, she realized it was empty. She didn’t have any idea what had happened, as grandfather had always lived in this house; he had grown up in this house. It was a wonderful home—it wasn’t a mansion, but close to one. There were twenty acres with forests, a small lake, and several barns with horses. There were caretakers’ cabins and several bunkhouses for any of the workers who needed a place to stay, either for the night or for living permanently. There were lawns with many gardens that were maintained by a group of landscapers. When Diana had seen the house was empty, she wanted to ask around to see if any of the neighbors knew her grandfather, but before she was able to contact anyone, a man showed up
