"Hablar sobre la realidad actual cubana es algo bien difícil, porque tiene más colores que un arcoíris y el agridulce sabor de la melancolía, sobre todo para el au-sente, quien tuvo que emigrar a rehacer su vida en tie-rras lejanas al hogar infantil. En esas arenas movedizas del entonces naciente, Período Especial en Cuba, y mu-chos años antes, transitan los personajes de estas histo-rias.
El primer libro de la escritora cubanoamericana, Betty Viamontes, Esperando en la calle Zapote, traza el rumbo de lo que leeremos después en su segunda obra: Los secretos de Candela y otros cuentos de La Habana. La autora es admirable en sus narraciones, no solo por la manera tan espontanea de contar, sino por hacernos partícipe de sentimientos comunes, a todos los inmi-grantes del mundo que abandonan su país de origen, en busca de oportunidades y libertad.
La realidad supera con creces la ficción, en el anecdotario de Betty Viamontes. No es lo mismo que alguien cuente su experiencia de navegar sobre mar em-bravecido, que sobrevivir en un bote movido por las olas gigantescas, sintiendo el terror de no poder llegar a la otra orilla, como le ocurrió a la escritora y su familia, en abril de 1980, cuando más de cien mil hombres, mujeres y niños salieron de las costas del Mariel, Cuba, arries-gando sus vidas al cruzar el Estrecho de la Florida en barcos de todos los tamaños.
Betty Viamontes expone la realidad retratando el paisaje habanero, con mirada descriptiva del entorno: “Le echó un poquito de aceite y sal a su pan, se sirvió un vaso de agua, y se sentó en un sillón verde al lado de su balcón, en el segundo piso, deteriorado y sin pintura... La calle Zapote poblada de casas coloniales despintadas y en mal estado, estaba casi desierta, a excepción de al-gunos autos que pasaban con poca frecuencia y una an-ciana que caminaba junto a su perro desnutrido, por la acera rota.”
Las narraciones de Betty Viamontes, son como el arca de Noé, recogen todos los «especímenes» para con-servar a la posterioridad, el perfil de un pueblo lanzado a un destino incierto.
Para la autora, nada es obstáculo ante su voluntad de hacer algo tan valioso, como perpetuar la memoria de esos días y de la existencia de muchas personas, en estos años sin futuro. Escribe, diseña, traduce en dos idiomas tan diferentes como son el inglés y el español, incluso vende sus narraciones, sin dejar de trabajar de Adminis-tradora de Finanzas en un hospital de Tampa, además de atender las labores hogareñas, la salud de su esposo y las visitas a sus suegros quienes la apoyan de manera incondicional en su creación literaria.
Betty nunca olvida reconocer en cada paso de su obra literaria, a quien le dio la vida e inspiración, por eso desde su primera conversación me afirma: «Le debo to-do lo que escribo a mi madre, mis libros llevan su enor-me contribución, ella quería que todos supieran esta his-toria y le prometí que la escribiría». Una promesa bien cumplida."

Betty Viamontes
Betty Viamontes was born in Havana, Cuba. In 1980, at age fifteen, she and her family arrived in the United States on a shrimp boat to reunite with her father after twelve years of separation. "Waiting on Zapote Street," based on her family's story, her first novel won the Latino Books into Movies award and has been selected by many book clubs. She also published an anthology of short stories, all of which take place on Zapote Street and include some of the characters from her first novel. Betty's stories have traveled the world, from the award-winning Waiting on Zapote Street to the No. 1 New Amazon re-leases "The Girl from White Creek," "The Pedro Pan Girls: Seeking Closure," and "Brothers: A Pedro Pan Story."
