Chapter 1: Discovering a New Purpose
In America, we are taught that the pursuit of happiness is a right. We are encouraged to reach for our dreams and to dream big. Popular movies typically end with living happily ever after.
Everything in our culture tells us to seek out the best life possible. But the reality is that life is full of disappointments. Not everyone will achieve their dream. Not everyone will live out the fairy tale. People disappoint us; people reject us. We may have financial security until a hurricane, tornado, or an earthquake strikes. Everything good in this life eventually comes to an end. Even if you have a rock-solid relationship, all people eventually die.
It is April of 2020 as I write this. The world is in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. In many places in the United States, essential business have been shut down, people are not gathering with family or friends due to sheltering in place ordinances, and there is a real concern that hospitals could become overwhelmed and there won’t be enough ventilators to help patients who get sick. The effects of all this are hitting people financially and emotionally. Who could have predicted this would have happened three months ago?
The world is uncertain and far from perfect. Everyone has trials and disappointments, and this latest pandemic has affected everyone. Most people have a sense that life isn’t functioning the way that it should.
