Are you sure this is where they hunt?
Damien asked for the third time.
Aaron didn’t bother to turn around and look at him. He was growing weary of the questions.
For the last time,
Aaron said through gritted teeth, I’ve seen the evidence myself. The carcasses, the paw prints. They’re here, all right.
Okay, okay. I just don’t want us all out on a wild goose chase.
Damien walked alongside Luke, Trace, and Glen. They wore their battle armor and carried their favorite weapons—the most prized of all the hunters: crossbows, lances, and the Sword of the Patrons. All were made of silver.
We’re not on a goose chase,
replied Aaron. I’m not leaving these grounds until I bag one of those bastards. It’s time for some payback. We need to show them that they can’t get away with raiding our towns and killing our people. The elders will honor us when they see our victory.
The young men pushed their way through the thick undergrowth and clusters of thorn patches before coming upon a rough trail that twisted up a hill. They followed the trail up the hill, struggling to keep their footing.
Aaron stayed in the lead—exactly where he always wanted to be. There were many reasons he had grown into wanting to lead the hunts, but none were as strong as wanting to impress his father and show him he was worthy. Worthy of carrying the family musket into battle. He had to prove to his father, and to everyone, that he could be victorious in battle, that he could best their enemies. Only then would the family musket pass to him.
His father had put down many werewolves with that musket. Aaron had to have it. It was his legacy. Not to mention that he hated the creatures. Those man-killing, savage, inhuman things deserved everything they got. He’d been hearing about their evil since he was little boy sitting on his father’s lap, eyeing the musket sitting above the hearth and listening to the crackling flames and his father’s tales of bravery.
Guys…look…there!
Aaron stopped and pointed down into the ravine. The others joined him and stared at the body of an elk down below. The animal had been torn apart, its insides strewn across the ground.
C’mon,
Aaron said to the others. Let’s get down there. We’re so close now.
Aaron raced down the ravine, the others right behind him until he reached the carcass. Heat was still radiating off it. It made him freeze in place. The kill was fresh. He could almost sense the feeding frenzy that must have happened just moments ago. Bloodlust still wafted in the air. He could only imagine the orgy of death and gore that had taken place here as the damned creatures danced in their wickedness and relished the carnage. The animal’s blood was scattered around the area, spotting trees, and trails of it snaked across the ground. One thing bothered Aaron. The feeding had just happened—
Where are they? Where are the beasts now?
Hey…
Aaron whispered to Damien and Luke. Be on alert…they can’t be far. We may have just interrupted them.
Trace and Glen tried to overhear but all they could do was snicker at the poor dead animal at their feet.
Guys…
Aaron turned to them. Hazy sunlight poured through the forest canopy almost like a beacon shining down on Aaron and his friends. A chill filled the air and the hair on his arms stood up.
Aaron ripped the sword from its scabbard and eyed Damien.
Damien grabbed his twin daggers and twirled them. Aaron lifted his sword. The others still hadn’t realized what was going on, and—
A howl cut through the air. Everyone looked up. A gang of werewolves stood at the top of the ravine. But, even now, they were leaping into the air…
The shifters hit them hard. Aaron and his comrades went down. A chaotic scramble for survival ensued. One of the wolves straddled Aaron, but he managed to bash him in the head with the hilt of his sword. The shifter toppled to the ground as Aaron rolled over onto his belly and crawled to his feet.
His heart was in his throat and he looked up to see Trace soaring through the air and colliding with a tree. Aaron heard a snap and watched Trace slide to the ground and fall still. Aaron was sure Trace’s spine had been snapped.
Glen tried to flee the scene but two shifters leaped onto him and forced him to the ground. Aaron saw a blur of claws slashing and teeth gnashing.
Aaron used the blade of his sword to pull himself to his feet. He rushed as fast as he could toward Glen, but he was too late. The shifters scattered away from Glen’s lifeless body and Aaron stopped short before reaching the corpse. His eyes welled up with tears and a few feet away he noticed Luke dead as well, mouth frozen in a scream, dead eyes leering at him. Aaron screamed.
Footfalls sounded behind him. Aaron spun around and ducked as the shifter he’d bashed with
