Chapter 1

On Our Way

WHEN DO YOU THINK WE’LL see a bear? sighed Max. They had arrived in Yellowstone yesterday evening, and he could not wait to see one. He pressed his face up against the glass, eagerly scanning the trees for animals. They were on their way to Old Faithful, a giant geyser of steam and water that erupts again and again, but he was more interested in animals.

If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll see one today, said Grandpa.

Are you ready for an adventure? asked Grandma, as she handed each grandchild a sketchbook, so they could draw what they saw as they explored.

Josie and Max looked at each other, Yes!

We should be getting close to Old Faithful soon, replied Josie, Max’s 9-year-old sister. She flipped the map onto Max’s lap and pointed at the road, According to the map, we are only ten miles away!

Good thing you have that map, Max whispered to Josie. Grandpa’s always missing the exits and turns!

They both giggled behind the map. 

What are you two giggling about? asked Grandpa.

Max and Josie exchanged a look and replied brightly, Nothing, Grandpa!

Before Grandpa could respond, Grandma exclaimed, Oh! Look up ahead on the road!

Is it a bear? asked Max.

Well, they are big and brown, but it is a herd of bison, not a bear, explained Grandma, as she pointed out the windshield.

Several big bison meandered slowly across the road. Grandpa came to a stop and pulled out his camera.
