Strangers In The Woods: Laura McNaughty Adventures, #2
By Simon Dudley

About this ebook
Strangers in the Woods is the second book in the Laura McNaughty Adventures series. The stories are suitable for all age groups, from kids of all levels, to teens and adults too. It's just good family reading. And the books can be read in any order as the stories stand alone.
Laura's brother, Johnny, and his pals have great fun clearing the local tidal pool of some unwelcome visitors; and Laura gets to grips with some strange "goings-on" while camping with her friends on an Island just a few miles off the coast from her favourite beach. Could the unexplained events on the island be linked to the arrival of two mysterious birdwatchers in Stokey's Woods?
Laura McBean lives in the middle cottage of three with her brother Johnny and her mum on the edge of Stokey's Woods. Laura was quite a mischievous girl when she was growing up, and that is how she got the nickname of Laura McNaughty. She doesn't get into as much mischief now because she is that little bit older; but if she finds out that someone has been cruel to animals then that person, whoever he or she maybe, will have Laura and her friends to contend with.
Simon Dudley's, beautifully written and charmingly portrayed, children's book series is a pleasure to read. The lost and nearly forgotten years of 1950's childhood can be experienced within these pages as the author cleverly immerses you into their world. This is a real treat for any reader, young or old, who fancies a bit of time travel back to when kids could literally be kids.

Fog was rolling inland from the sea just as Johnny arrived at the village shop, and by the time he left to start his morning paper round, the harbour had vanished into a misty oblivion.
Visibility did improve slightly as he cycled uphill to the top of George Street, but he was soon cloaked in darkness again as he continued down the other side of the hill.
For the next hour he was in and out of the fog until the last newspaper was delivered, and then he could head on home for breakfast.
This always happens, he thought to himself, as he cycled homewards leaving the fog behind. A week of sunny weather is nearly always followed by thunderstorms and sea fog. Last night’s storm had been one of the best he'd seen for a long time, and he and Laura had been fascinated by the lightning as they watched the spectacle from his bedroom window.
During breakfast, the railway cottages were plunged into a smoky gloom as the sea-fog advanced inland like a big, magic cloak consuming everything in its path. Strangers to the area would not have known that the three railway cottages even existed as they made their way along the road towards the village.
Mr Roberts told us a ghost story about the fog,
said Laura. He said the fog brings the ghosts of drowned sailors with it from the sea, and that’s the reason the fog is cold and damp to walk through.
Did you see any dead sailors wandering about in the fog this morning?
Mrs McBean asked her son.
One or two,
laughed Johnny, winking at his younger sister.
Do you believe in ghosts, mum?
asked Laura, stirring her porridge absentmindedly.
Of course not, how many times do I have to tell you. Everybody enjoys a good ghost story, Laura, but that’s all they are, stories. Mind you,
she continued, the stories can be scary if you let your imagination run wild.
Let’s hope there’s no fog next weekend when you are camping out on the island,
teased Johnny. The place is haunted enough already without an invasion of dead sailors as well.
Don’t take any notice of your brother, Laura. He’s just trying to scare you.
I’m not scared, mum. Not anymore, I’m not.
Johnny choked on his porridge with laughter as he reminded his sister about the time, she actually believed that ghosts existed.
Serves you right, young man,
said Mrs McBean sternly. You know better than to speak with your mouth full. Anyone would think that you have no table manners at all.
Mum, there’s a few of us going fishing down at the harbour after tea. We’re going after that conger eel everyone’s been talking about,
said Johnny.
That sounds like a bit of a red herring to me. You’ll all be down there on a wild goose chase much to the amusement of the drinkers in the Fisherman’s Arms.
Conger eels have been caught in the harbour loads of times,
said Johnny.
Well just be careful because they bite. Did I ever tell you about the time...?
Yes mum,
Laura
