    The Gun With No Brain - Michael Polillo

    It was lightly raining while Rob Bellmore descended the stairs towards his apartment. It was in the basement of a three story complex filled with others like him. Bob was a tall man, at least six-three, but he wasn't built to match his height.

    His wife, Whitney was half asleep on the couch with the TV quietly humming.

    Rob pulled a blanket over her and sat down with a cold glass of water from the tap. He ran his fingers down her legs and she stirred awake.

    Looks like someone's finally back. I made dinner, but it's more than a little cold now.

    What'd you make?

    Potato cakes and with black beans.

    That's some combo.

    It's all we had lying around here.

    Rob heaved himself from the couch back into the kitchen. There was a plate wrapped in foil on the kitchen table. He opened the fridge and it was empty save for condiments and old milk. He ate the cold meal while standing by the TV.

    How much longer are you going to be coming home at eleven at night?

    Most wives like it when their husbands work late. Just think of it as me being on a late shift.

    But you're not on a late shift. You're on a second job. One that pays you dirt.

    You know we need the money.

    No shit. That's why I've been picking up extra hours too, but at least I'm home before nine.

    Don't worry, it won't be like this forever.

    Really cause it's been going on a few months and that feels like forever.

    It's going to take some time to pay these debts. I owe money all over Brixton. To the Corbuccis, to the Hillbergs, to the Cygnet gang. I'm probably forgetting someone too.

    Yeah you're forgetting the two men who came here this afternoon, she said.
