About this ebook

Peter Green wakes in police custody in hospital to the voice of a psychiatrist. Over the next few recorded sessions he painfully recalls the disastrous events of his life that have led him to this point, and the realisation is too painful to live with.

We listen to those recorded interviews in the company of Peter's father, who, grieving for his son, has travelled to Thailand to look for answers. When, like his son, he realises the truth, it is too painful to accept, and the consequences are once again deadly.

Yeah... and I did. Shall I say it again?

It's a weird one. We know you like weird ones. There's a tape you need to listen to, so he told me to set up the tape machine, a pot of coffee and plenty of snacks. So, there you are. He reckons you'll need an hour or so, and you're not to be disturbed.

What? Are you my wife now?

    Just pop the question darlin'.

    Get out of here Sergeant.

    Awwwww.......

    Chapter 2—Hello Mr Green

    CLICK

Hello Mr Green. Thank you for coming so quickly at this very difficult time, and please accept my most sincere condolences.

    Thank you.

I understand that you have completed all the formal paperwork, but there is just one other matter that I would like to bring to your attention. I make a habit of recording all of my interviews. Those recordings still exist, and I was wondering if you would like to listen to them. You are not obliged to of course, and I fully understand if you would prefer not to, and incidentally, as you can see, I am also recording this session. Experience has taught me that it's best to keep a complete record of my conversations.

Is there somewhere quiet and private that I might do that?

Yes, of course, I'll take you through to one of the guest rooms on the other side of the building. It will be a lot quieter over there, and you will be able to listen in private, but I do warn you Mr Green, it will not be easy to listen to in places. Can I get you some tea or coffee first?

    Do you have anything stronger?

No, I'm afraid not. Not in the Embassy complex.

Just an iced tea then please.

Here you are Mr Green, your tea. I'll leave you in peace, but don't hesitate to call me from the other room if necessary. Just start and stop the tape on this machine whenever you like.

Please note that I have signed you out of the main building, which now means that you can come and go through my private entrance that we passed on the way up. It's very quiet now anyway. We have a long weekend coming up, and most people are trying to get out of the city this afternoon.

    Chapter 3—Can You Hear Me?

    Click.

Hello. Mr Green. Can you hear me? I'm Dr John Davies from the Embassy. I would like to talk to you. Would that be all right? Do you feel like talking today? I came before, but you were not well enough. The doctor thinks that perhaps you might be feeling better today. Are you feeling better, Peter?

What? Better? Did you say better? I, I can see you, but what are you saying? It's not clear. Where am I?

You are in hospital. Can you remember what happened to you? Why you are here? It is my job to help you if I can.

Oh. Umm... I can remember some things. Yes. Some things.

Can you tell me about it?

Did you say Embassy...? What has the Embassy got to do with me?

Well... I'm a Doctor... they have asked me to talk to you; to see if you are well enough.

    Well enough?

Well, to see if you are well. You know you are in trouble, Peter. I think you know that, right?

Did I crash? Is that real, or a dream? I think it was real... but... why?

It is real I'm afraid, Peter. You hit some people.

Oh no.... I so hoped that was a dream... Oh... what...? Oh my head.... Please get that bowl. I think I'm going to....

    Click.

    Click.

Hello Peter, how is your head today? Do you remember me? I'm Dr Davies. I came to see you a few days ago. We talked for a while. Do you remember?

No... Well.... I know I talked to someone. You were in my dream. Oh, I have such terrible dreams here. The guards. I have guards in my dreams; they come to hurt me. Are you here to hurt me?

No, I want to help you if I can. I need to talk to you about what happened. I want to help you remember, so that we can find out why it happened.

What? What happened? Am I sick?

You had a car crash. Can you remember that? You hit some people.

People? People? Were they hurt...? Are they here? Why? Why am I here?

    Click.

    Click.

Hello Peter. The doctor tells me that you are much better, and that you have been talking to the nurses. I hope you have stopped dreaming about the guards. I tried to fix that for you.

The guards? Why would I dream about guards? I didn't see any guards, but I need to see you. I need your help. I want to get out of here. Can I go home?

Go home? Do you really think you can go home after what happened? You had an accident, Peter. We talked about this last time. Some people were... Well, your car hit some people. I don't think you can go home just yet, not until we find out how it happened. Do you think you can tell me how it happened?

But you told me. You told me it was an accident. What more is there to say? I don't know what else to say. It's not clear. I can remember some things, but not the accident or, or, well, there was something else, something after the accident, some boys, some boys at the window. Who were they? What, what were they doing to me. They were shouting, but, but not angry. Afraid. Why were they afraid? Who were they?

Peter, please try to calm down. The doctors here have been giving you medicine to keep you quiet; help you sleep. I have asked them to stop giving you that medicine so that we can talk, but I'm afraid you might get very stressed if you try to think too much. Please try to stay calm, or we will have to give you the medicine again.

    I understand.

    Chapter 4—His Voice

Mr Green, are you all right. I noticed it had gone very quiet. Have you changed your mind about listening to the tape?

No. No. I will listen. I am just preparing myself. It is very difficult for me to hear his voice after what happened. I'm sure you understand.

Perhaps you would prefer to come again on another day?

No.... I would like to get it over with in one go. Thank you.

    Chapter 5—The Journey

    Click.

I know you are confused about what happened, but I don't want you to think about that. I want you to start at the beginning. Can you do that? Please tell me about that day. Why you went there. Anything you can recall; just let it flow out. The other things, the things you can't remember now... they will come out naturally. Just talk. Talk about anything in your life that you think of. It might be useful. I am recording this conversation. I hope that's all right with you.

Talk about anything in my life? Wow... you don't know me at all. You better get seated comfortably.

Well, on that day I got up really early to get out of town before the morning rush, and head straight on down to see some guy. What was his name? I think it was Marcel, or some shit made-up name like that. I could be there in a couple of hours, with plenty of time to kill before the meeting.

Marcel arranged it for 11am at some expat-style breakfast place. Shit, I hate that whole expat thing.... what does that even mean anyway? I've been here like thirty years or something - am I an expat...? What does that even mean? Ex... fucking.... pat.... Like, my name used to be Pat or something? I tell you what it seems to mean. If you ask me, it means rich white dudes living in the lap
