About this ebook

Idolatry is something we must not take lightly. As I study the bible, I note with interest that the judgement of God came upon His people because of idolatry. Idolatry is not only worshipping physical things such as a wooden statue, the moon, the stars or animals, it is whatever is lord over your life. If Jesus is not Lord over your life, then your heart is given over to Idolatry.
This book is geared towards the believer who is serious about being transformed by the power of God and will help you to discern the idols that are hindering the flow of the anointing in your life and show you how to dismantle them. The more purity, the more power, so let us dismantle those idols in our lives as God reveals them to us.

Dismantle Those Idols (Idolatry Exposed) - Elsa Mullings

Preface

As you journey through the word of God, you will find that idolatry was a perpetual problem. In the Old Testament, idols were mainly graven images which people worshipped as their god. This form of idolatry still exists today, mostly in eastern countries such as India, China and Africa. Though not limited to these countries, it is practiced to some degree all over the world.

Idolatry comes in different forms as you will see throughout this book. We are living in the days of deception; many Christians are religious instead of Christ-like. God is after a transformed heart; He wants to pour out the full measure of His anointing in us so His glory may be revealed in us in the earth. Joel 2 verses 12 & 13 (Amplified) - Therefore now says the Lord, Turn and keep coming to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping and with mourning (until every hindrance is removed and every broken fellowship restored). Rend your hearts and not your garments and return to the Lord your God...

As the coming of the Lord draws near, we will hear like a recurring decimal holiness, purity and repentance being preached. We are not perfect but the word of God says we are to move onto perfection. He commands us to be holy as He is holy. God will deal with each of His children as sons as He rebukes, chastens and points out to us all the areas in our lives that we are protecting with our defenses, God wants to penetrate these defenses and bring healing and deliverance. He wants to be Lord over every area of our lives. God is patient and longsuffering with us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

The word repentance means to change direction and not only refers to unbelievers but also to Christians. There are believers in the body of Christ perishing for lack of knowledge, Hosea chapter 4 verse 6 says, My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee.

The word knowledge does not only refer to information of the word of God but the revelation of His word which is only given by the Holy Spirit. When we get revelation of the word of God, we get an insight of who God is and what He requires of us. When revelation knowledge comes to us, we can respond in two ways, either we change our ways and walk in obedience or continue in sin which only leads to death. The knowledge of God’s word without revelation of who He is, equals religion.  The Lord spoke to me one day and said the reason why the fear of God is lacking in the body of Christ is because His people lack revelation of who He is.

Of Idolatry

CHAPTER 1

Covetousness

(Greed)

The word covetous and greed are used to mean the same thing in different versions of the Bible. Colossians 3 verse 5 reads, Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth. Fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence and covetousness which is idolatry.  The Good News Bible states, "You must put to death the earthly desires at work in you such as sexual immorality, indecency, lust, evil passion and greed which is idolatry."

The Oxford Dictionary gives two meanings for the word greed. The first is a strong and selfish desire for possessions, wealth and power. The second is a desire to eat more food than is necessary. Therefore, greed for food or material things both are idolatry according to the word of God. In the book of Philippians 3 verses 17-19, Paul admonished the church to follow the example he has set for them - Brethren, be ye followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an example. For many walk, of whom I have told you often and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies to the cross of Christ; whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, which mind earthly things.  We see in this passage of scripture that the love for food is so much that it controls us, makes it a god.

There are times God may be calling for us to go on a fast which is most times a food fast. If we love food so much that we cannot give it up, that means our belly is controlling us. Fasting is a form of sacrifice unto God which is beneficial to our spiritual growth and development. It is an act of self-denial and is a way of keeping the flesh under subjection and opens up our spirit to hear God more clearly and also strengthens the inner man. When we deny self for the glory of God, we are giving God true worship, we are saying with our hearts that Jesus is Lord. Submitting ourselves to God in obedience is the highest form of worship. (I will go into the topic of fasting further in this book).

Covetousness also springs from selfishness. Our cupboards may be stocked with a lot of food that we do not even need and instead of sharing it with others, we keep it until it is spoilt instead of giving to someone in need or we stuff ourselves with more than we need. The early church was a very powerful church; they demonstrated their love for one another by sharing. Let’s look at the book of Acts 4 verses 32-35 - And the multitude of them that believed was of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things in common. And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them and brought the prices of the things that were sold and laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. As a result, the church grew and exhibited the glory of God; they practiced the love walk.

One of the best ways to demonstrate our love for one another is by giving. The perfect example is God giving us His Son to die for us. John 3 verse 16 - For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Therefore, if we are walking in love, we will not see our brothers and sisters in need and neglect them but share our resources with them. It is interesting to note the root cause of Sodom`s problem was not homosexuality; homosexuality has a deep root. Let’s examine Ezekiel 16 verse 49, Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

Greed for Wealth, Possession and Power

We are living in a world today that is highly competitive. We all desire things and in itself nothing is wrong. However, when our desires drive us to destroy our neighbors and violate the principles of God, then the desires become idolatrous. Exodus 20 verse 17 states, Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor’s. It is sad to say greed for wealth, possession and power exists in the body of Christ today and affects the move of God in our lives and in the body of Christ. There is competition and strife among church members to reach the top, get attention and gain position. This is purely carnal. A believer walking in the spirit and submitting to the Lordship of Christ need not strive to reach the top. He must learn submission and servitude. Psalm 75 verse 6 & 7 reads, Promotion comes not from the east nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge; He putteth down one, and setteth up another. James 4 verse 10 states, Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.

It is God’s will to prosper us. Money is needed to support the work of the Kingdom of God here on earth. God is the one who enables us to get this wealth. Deuteronomy 8 verse 18 - And you shall remember the Lord thy God for it is He who gives you the power to get wealth that he may establish His covenant which He swore to our fathers, as it is this day. Therefore, we must not worship the wealth but the source of all things who is God. The body of Christ is designed to function as a normal body. The feet cannot do what the eyes do nor can the mouth cannot do what the ears do. We are all strategically placed in the body of Christ for a specific function. God has called each believer in the body of Christ for a specific function and we should not try to be like anyone else, this will lead to confusion and strife in the body of Christ.

God may have promised to prosper you and it seems as if it is taking a long time but He is more interested in building your character than anything else. He desires fruit from us. 1st Peter 1 verse 7 says, That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it is tried with fire might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. Patience is one of the fruit of the Spirit which God wants to develop in us. Patience undergirds our faith resulting in its development. This is likened
