Introduction
A Parent’s Call to Prayer
Children are a heritage from the Lord,
offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the
hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth.
Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.
Psalm 127: 3-5 (NIV)
As parents, we have a high and mighty calling to raise children who will impact the next generation. Praise be to God he has bestowed upon us this beautiful blessing! However, along with the precious gift of children comes the weighty responsibility of imparting to our little ones the truths of God. This responsibility should not be taken lightly.
We live in a society that elevates self-righteousness
over God’s righteousness. Our culture is crumbling before our very eyes. We are inundated with media telling us to live contradictory to what Scripture states. Our children are deemed worthy
and popular
by the number of social media followers they have and not by the virtue of their character.
Our society is backward because the whole world lies in the power of the evil one
(1 John 5:19 ESV). Nevertheless, it is confusing the hearts and minds of our kids. That is why it is imperative, as Christian parents, we communicate effectively to our children what is right and what is wrong even if it’s unpopular. We must lead through example and take an active role in shaping their lives—so they will be able to discern what is of the world and therefore terminal and what is truly lasting in the Kingdom of God.
Sadly, we cannot single-handedly change the direction our society is headed and ultimately our children will be faced with many daunting decisions in life. Yet, we can individually empower our children to shine brightly for Jesus in the midst of the darkness; so, when they are faced with these difficult choices and crossroads in their lives, our children will be solidly established in the promises of Christ.
This empowerment begins in the home through a powerful, scripturally rooted prayer life.
There is an urgency today to teach the future generation the importance of calling to God not just in the middle of their struggles (as a lifeline) but in the everyday. There is also an urgency for children’s parents to powerfully claim the promises of God over their children’s lives.
It is time to start exercising the practice of prayer because prayer unleashes God’s power!
God’s Word tells us, For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us
(2 Corinthians 1:20). However, if we fail to claim these promises, we miss out on this richness mindfully interwoven throughout the Bible.
We have been given a powerful tool from our Heavenly Father—a direct channel to his heart through prayer. Every single time we call out through spoken voice, quiet thoughts or even groans, our God Almighty hears us. Scripture tells us he hears the prayers of the righteous (Proverbs 15:39).
Please use these prayers in the following pages as a guide in your journey to pray over your children, born or unborn, and to teach them about prayer. Each specific, themed prayer is laced with God’s powerful promises. You may want to substitute your child’s or children’s names for the generic terms in italics used in the prayers or read them as they are if you’re not sure yet who’s in your womb.
Let’s begin crowning our children with God’s promises and using Scripture to speak the truths of Christ’s power and provision over our kids’ lives.
This way we can successfully train them up in the habit of prayer, teach them God’s Word, and
