    About the Author

This book is dedicated to Aurelia, who gave me the first chapter and inspired the rest of the story. All of the adventures of Princess Aurelia has been for her.

Princess Aurelia and the Sick Unicorns

Princess Aurelia of Gew had finished her school work for the day and had come down to the garden to enjoy the sunshine. It being late spring the garden was full of blooms. The scent and colours called for her to sit in the grass and soak it all in.

Princess Aurelia had barely settled herself when she heard a weak groan from somewhere nearby. She looked around, but she didn’t see anything making the noise. Peering at the bushes, Princess Aurelia thought she saw something white.

Getting up, Princess Aurelia went over to the bushes. Moving a branch aside, she looked through and saw a white unicorn. It was lying on its side and moaned again. Princess Aurelia moved aside more branches so she could step through. She gently put her hand on the unicorn’s neck. The unicorn lifted its head enough to look at her. It seemed to be comforted by Princess Aurelia’s presence, so she sat down next to it.

The unicorn felt like velvet under Princess Aurelia’s hand. She noticed there were leaves and sticks caught in its mane suggesting a journey through a forest. Along the unicorn’s legs were scratches, but they were not deep enough to draw blood. There were no obvious signs of injuries, however it was in distress.

After a few minutes, the unicorn lifted its head again. But this time after looking briefly at Princess Aurelia, the unicorn got to its feet. It was unsteady and struggled for balance a moment before it started moving forward. It went to the end of the row of bushes and then stopped to look back. Without it speaking, Princess Aurelia realized it wanted her to follow.

Scrambling a little, Princess Aurelia got up and followed the unicorn. It led the way along the rows of bushes to a door in the wall that had been left open. The unicorn went through and Princess Aurelia followed. She left the door open so she could get back in.

This side of the castle had a couple metres of cleared space before the forest started. The unicorn entered into the forest where it looked like the unicorn had come through before. The path was not clear, so branches were brushing by Princess Aurelia. She ignored any scratches as her focus was only on keeping up with the unicorn.

Then suddenly Princess Aurelia stumbled into a clearing after the unicorn as she did not see the transition until they came upon it. The change in scenery caused Princess Aurelia to not notice what was going on in the clearing immediately. It was only with the realization that the unicorn had stopped before Princess Aurelia looked around. In the grass of the clearing were five unicorns lying as if they were all sick. The unicorn who had brought Princess Aurelia there looked at her expectantly.

Princess Aurelia went to the first one on the ground and knelt beside it. It lifted its head slightly to look at her, but only briefly. Princess Aurelia placed her hand on the creature’s neck, which seemed to comfort it a little bit.

What happened? Princess Aurelia asked the unicorn who had led her here, "Was it something
