Born into a bilingual family (Swedish/English), Hélene Fermont enjoyed an idylic childhood on the outskirts of Malmö, Sweden’s third largest city and major cultural hub. Growing up in the 1970s, she had a brief musical career on Swedish TV and radio prior to pursuing a career in teaching and a practising psychologist. Hélene lived in London for over 20 years but has recently returned to Sweden. She is currently working on her fifth novel, The Matchmaker.

    MANDY RICHARDS WAS in turmoil. The letter she never expected was in her inner jacket

    pocket. Clutching it, she ventured into the small cafe across the road from where she lived.

    Christopher Evans. Why did he get in touch after all these years?

    They'd been together for nearly ten years when he dropped a bombshell, and admitted he'd been having an affair behind her back. She'd refused to listen to his explanation and his excuses and threw him out the next day. Moving in with some friend not far away from the flat they shared together, she'd not heard or seen him since then.

    Why did he get in touch? A mutual acquaintance must have given him her address.

    Reading the letter while seated in a corner of the dimly­lit cafe, sipping her coffee, Mandy let out a big sigh. They'd been so happy and in love. She wondered what he looked like now. In the letter he described how much he enjoyed his job as manager of a software company, and his life in a flat in a London suburb. She wondered, what was the real reason he got in touch after such a long time? The letter finished:

    You wanted nothing more to do with me back then. But I can't forget you and how much we meant to each other. I made the biggest mistake of my life and need to see you and explain. Please get in touch. We owe it to each other to get closure.

    Ten years. So much had happened in her life since they parted.

    For a start, she'd achieved much success as an interior designer and opened up her own designer studio. She had recently split up with a lover who was incapable of expressing his feelings and preferred a casual no strings attached relationship.

    Christopher Evans. Just thinking about him and their special connection brought tears to her eyes. Why did he have to get in touch now? She'd fought so hard to forget him, yet he was always there, in her thoughts, mind and heart.

    They'd met at an art exhibition in Brighton where both of them lived when they were very young. Somehow their paths crossed again and when he asked her out on a date they'd hit it off immediately, talking into
