CHAPTER ONE
Thomas
It was the last few dollars I had to my name, but fuck, I really needed a drink. The past few weeks had been hell. I went from being a nineteen-year-old punk living the dream, at my parents’ house, to a homeless twenty-one-year-old trying to hustle for his next meal. There had been several days where I hadn’t had a single bite to eat. My stomach felt like it was going to eat itself from the inside out. It didn’t have to be this way. I could always go back home with my tail between my legs.
Fuck that.
Give me a whiskey,
I called out to the bartender, who was wiping down the counter of the bar.
The man looked over in my direction. His thick brown eyebrow was raised. His beard was thick and rugged, but it didn’t hide the curve of the corner of his lip.
You old enough to drink, kid?
He chuckled. His deep voice matched his over-sized body.
You the cops?
I growled, crossing my arms in front of my chest.
I’d heard talk about the drinking age being raised in a lot of states, but Arizona was still only nineteen. Either way, it was legal for me to drink. Even if it wasn’t, who did this asshole think he was. Since when did places like The Joint check ID’s?
The Joint was a bar that I was currently holding up in. It had a reputation of being where the ex-cons, fugitives, riffraff, and nobodies like me went to drink. This was my first time here. With asshole’s question, it may very well be my last time. I was looking for cheap booze, not an interrogation.
Relax, kid. Just fuckin’ with ya’,
the bartender laughed then grabbed a bottle of whiskey off the shelf.
It wasn’t long until he was sliding a glass of whiskey in front of me. I reached into the front pocket of my jeans to grab the wad of dollar bills. The dollars I made from hustling a game of pool.
As I was pulling out the money, the bartender held up one of his large hands. He shook his head.
This one’s on the house, kid.
With that, he turned and made his way to two men, who were sitting at the end of the bar.
The two men’s body language and rugged look shouted motorcycle gang. They were old enough to be my dad. Their faces looked leathery; probably from too much time in the sun while riding their bikes. They wore black leather biker vests with different patches on them. The man with the thick black hair and beard wore a patch with some sort of dragon on it. I couldn’t make out the words or details. The man on the left with the gray beard and balding head wore a patch that resembled some sort of demon. Or maybe it was a devil?
There were quite a few bikes out front when I walked up. I even eyed a few but knew better than to touch or even get close to any of them. There were unspoken rules when it came to other people’s motorcycles, cars, and women.
Since when did I give two shits about rules? I laughed to myself then looked at the two bikers again.
The two men looked to be having a serious conversation. Even me, an outsider, could tell there was tension between them.
The two groups of bikers sitting on opposite sides of the bar were also a tale-tell sign that something was wrong. Each group wore a patch matching one of the two men. It wasn’t until that moment that I realized there were only the two biker gangs, the bartender, and me in the bar.
Apparently, I was too absorbed in my pathetic world to notice the cluster of fucks I had just walked into.
Fuck it,
I muttered before picking up my glass of whiskey and downing it.
The liquid of the gods burned going down but damn it felt good to have a drink. I missed being able to walk over to my dad's liquor cabinet and help myself. So many times, I got wasted off his booze… and so many times he beat me black and blue for it. Not that he ever needed a reason to beat on me, but at least those beatings were semi-justified.
Need another, kid?
The bartender asked holding
