Nowhere To Go - Miles Dini

By Miles Dini and Edited by Roselyn Obondi

    Dedication

This is for those who are looking for jobs or recently lost their jobs. As one continues the job hunt, they should do so without ceasing. They shouldn’t do or apply any job out of desperation. Before applying for a job, check thoroughly their requirements. Follow your passion.

    CHAPTER 1

Anna was really excited. There was a graduation party at her place. She made it a point to share how overjoyed she was, with those in attendance. Her house was packed to capacity. She had pursued a course in Hospitality Management and managed to get a Second Class Honors, Upper Division. Everybody (relatives and friends) in the house kept on congratulating and hugging her. It was finally time for Anna to be addressed by her visitors, so Anna’s mother called the meeting to order.

Anna’s mother stood behind a couch that was next to their television set. She was quite shy, so she took deep breaths before addressing her visitors. Wow! I can’t believe my daughter has finally graduated, she began her speech and nearly wept. This just signifies how old I am getting. Just the other day, you had a problem counting one up to ten, she joked and people chuckled.

Anyway, I shouldn’t talk so much. Other people here need to address Anna. The only thing I can say as a mother is; congratulations! Anna’s mother said. Anna smiled. As people commonly say; welcome to the world of endless job hunting. Personally, I did it for two years. Others do this for ten years but I hope this won’t be the case for you. Once more, people chuckled. Britney, Anna’s mother; decided to invite other speakers to address Anna.

It took more than an hour for the speakers to address Anna. By this point, Anna became bored. All the speeches began to sound cliché to her. People began to repeat themselves. They kept on reminding her on: how difficult hunting for jobs was, tips to ace job interviews, how long people struggle to get jobs et cetera. When the speeches were finally over, Anna was relieved and she joined her friends in eating and drinking.

Anna took a soda from a crate and her older brother joined her. Sis congratulations! Harry, her brother said to her. Anna rolled her eyes and jokingly remarked, At this point if I hear one more congratulations, I will stab my ears with a fork. That’s dark sis! Besides, how are people going to give you tips to get jobs if you don’t have any ears? Harry was also jocular. They both laughed out loud.

So, what next? Harry asked Anna. Well, I guess I will focus on having fun right now and I will let tomorrow bring whatever challenges it has for me, Anna replied. That’s the spirit! This is the time to have fun. Don’t let anything bring you down, Harry advised her. Anna joined her friends and drank with them.

Anna’s best friend, Kelly; was one of many of her friends who attended the party. Anna was much excited to see her as compared to even her own relatives.

Thanks for honoring my invitation, Anna said to Kelly. Of course. We have been best friends for so long. Why would I not come? Kelly said. So, how has work been for you? Anna asked Kelly. Kelly had graduated two years earlier than Anna and started working eight months after she graduated. She worked as a customer care agent for a bank. Work is always tiresome to be honest. I hardly look forward to work. I simply do it to survive. Otherwise if it were up to me, I would leave that job at the drop of a hat, Kelly responded. Anna seemed shocked by Kelly’s answer. Kelly noticed Anna seemed displeased by her answer.

Do not look at me like that Anna! Work is never fun. I challenge you to find someone who likes working, Kelly said. Um, workaholics? Anna answered. Workaholics do not count. What they do, could be considered a kind of mental disorder. They do not care to spend time with their friends or family members. It is always just work, work and more work, Kelly said. Fair enough. At least you should be grateful you are working. Other people never catch a break when it comes to job hunting, Anna said. Oh Anna! Wait till you have started working and you will understand where I am coming from, said Kelly.

As Kelly and Anna continued talking, other people joined them. They were mostly her uncles and aunties. They asked Anna to send them her resume via email. Soon more and more people wanted her to send hers via email. This made Anna giddy. Kelly smiled at Anna but she heard some news for her.

Don’t get too excited now. I was once where you are, Kelly told Anna. What do you mean? Anna asked. Most relatives lie through their teeth. They pretend they want to help you get jobs but they will never deliver. They are asking for your resume just for the fun of it, Kelly said. Anna was slightly offended and asked, What? How do you know that? After all, my relatives are different from yours. Kelly placed her hand on Anna’s and said, I agree that my relatives are different from yours but there is something most human beings do; they lie. I bet after you have given them your resume, you will follow up with them for at least six months; and then you will have to give up asking them whether they forwarded your resume. Anna then said, "We will see whether your theory will
