There is no way I’m going to sit here with these weirdos for a whole hour, Lenny Moniz thought as he walked into the meeting.
Nothing unusual stood out about the community room in this church basement. Dark wooden floors creaked with age. Plain walls flaunted a wooden cross, mounted behind a chipped podium. Folding metal chairs received strangers as they greeted each other like old friends.
No one better hug me,
Lenny mumbled, weaving into the crowd of meeting goers who situated themselves into cliques, all facing the podium.
Lenny passed two long tables set end to end, displaying pastries, beverages, and a trio of grandmother types. Refreshment customers traded smiles for treats, departed, and exchanged one-liners like: It works if you work it,
and Meeting makers make it!
Um…Bob?
Lenny tried pulling his eyes away, but it was like trying to turn away from an accident. One knew they shouldn’t be interested, but damn it if the eyes didn’t keep turning back anyways. Bob, really?
Crazy,
Lenny mused, as he passed by. Disappointingly, he was planted in the middle of the front row by the man he was following.
The white clock with black hands hung several feet away from the cross. It looked exactly like the ones his high school slapped up. It read seven p.m.
A thirty something looking man wearing blue jeans and a sport coat cruised his way down the aisle high fiving people at the end of the rows like on the ‘Price is Right,’ when a person gets called down to the contestants’ row.
