Chapter 1: The Unclaimed Money Recovery Business - An Overview

Let’s begin by identifying what Unclaimed Money really is:

What is Unclaimed Property?

Unclaimed Property (Unclaimed Money) refers to accounts in financial institutions and companies that have had no activity generated or contact with the owner for at least one year. Unclaimed Property Funds are kept by all 50 States, as well as, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta in Canada, and the nation of Kenya, as well as some other countries.

Common forms of Unclaimed Property include: savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed dividends or payroll checks, refunds, traveler's checks, trust distributions, unredeemed money orders or gift certificates (in some States), insurance payments or refunds and life insurance policies, annuities, certificates of deposit, customer overpayments, utility security deposits, mineral royalty payments, and contents of safe deposit boxes.

Claims for these funds can usually be filed in perpetuity, and can even be claimed by the heirs in most cases.

How Much Unclaimed Money is Out There?

In the United States alone, there is approximately 100 Billion in Unclaimed Funds, with about 60 Billion of that held by the States. The remainder is Federal and Local Funds, which are a bit harder to track down.

Let’s look at the States’ Unclaimed Funds first. Each State maintains a database which lists all of the Unclaimed Funds in that State, by: the name of the individual to whom the funds belong, the type of funds, and the amount involved. Some States will provide you with a complete current copy of their database for FREE, while others will charge you a Fee for obtaining it. We will discuss this more later on in this book.

Unclaimed Funds are deposited with the State of your last known address in that State. All you need to do to claim your funds is to provide adequate proof that the funds belong to you and fill out the necessary paperwork to get your funds sent to you.

Although anyone can claim their funds without paying a Fee, most people do not even know that there are any Unclaimed Funds in their name. This is where the Unclaimed Money Recovery Business comes into play.

How Does the Unclaimed Money Recovery Business Work?

You search the database of the State(s) of your choosing, locate the fund amount and the owner’s name, find the owner of the funds with the help of a Locating Service (Skip Tracing) (which can provide you with a current address and other contact information), contact the owner of the funds and offer to assist them in recovering their funds for a percentage Fee. Then, you get the owner to sign an Agreement, along with a Limited Power of Attorney to allow you to collect the funds for them for the agreed upon Fee. You collect the funds, minus your Fee, and turn over the remaining funds to your satisfied client.

This is a perfectly legal business, although some States will limit the amount of Fees that you can charge.

Building Your Foundation

Building a new business is like building a new house. You must start with a strong, solid foundation. Foundations aren’t necessarily pretty, take a lot of work to build, but are absolutely necessary if you want your house or business to stand the test of time.

Before beginning to learn all of the ins and outs of the Unclaimed Money Recovery Business, you must get your business foundation built and ready to support your new business. You are going to need to choose your Business Name and your Business Structure (sole-proprietorship, LLC, etc.).
