    Green River - Lawrence Simpson

    Chapter One

John sat in the back seat of the sheriff’s cruiser. He looked through the window at the passing trees. His wrists were shackled. He would have liked to roll down the window, but the control button in the back had been disabled.

Deputy Shaw drove at a moderate pace along the two lane road. The burley deputy chewed on a piece of beef jerky somewhat darker than the color of his tousled hair. He grumbled again about coming in on his off day to transport a prisoner.

About time they sent you on, eh? said the deputy.

John had endured several weeks in county juvenile detention waiting for Judge Birchen’s decision regarding his case. He didn’t answer the deputy, who kept his eyes on the two lane road.

Thirty more minutes, said the deputy with a smirk on his face.

Deputy Shaw was the uncle of one of the boys upstairs with Jessica at the Kincaid party. John remembered the deputy sitting in the closed door hearing along with the parents of the boys involved. Senator Kincaid had occupied a good portion of the judge’s time during the hearing. He had spoken more than John’s public attorney. When his father spoke, Paul Kincaid would turn his head and bare his teeth at John in a sneer of white like the light from a train emerging out of Blue Hole Tunnel back home. John had sensed the wheels of justice grinding over him. Judge Birchen found him guilty and sentenced him until age eighteen when his case would be reviewed again.

He closed his mind to that train of thought. Every time he thought of his parents he felt like his heart lay exposed, drying out with each beat in the cold air.

John’s thoughts were interrupted by the deputy again.

Here it is, he said. Your home for the next two years.

Deputy Shaw steered up to the main gate at Green River Farm Correctional Facility, which housed male offenders under eighteen years of age. The compound comprised a central administration building, a classroom and commons building combined with a kitchen and cafeteria, a garage and barn facilities, barracks style housing for the prisoners, and thirty acres of tillable fields.

A three meter tall perimeter chain link fence surrounded Green River Farm. The stranded barbed wire along the top of the fence revealed the nature of the place as did the institutional beige paint adorning the interior of the administration building. Deputy Shaw escorted John to the intake office, and left without comment after delivering his charge.
