    CHAPTER 1

    GOODBYE SUMMER

    Dear Me,

Ghoul School has a code. We live by the code. We have to because we are the undead, and we must follow the rules or we’ll be dead-dead if you know what I mean.

My name is Vlad Vulconi, and if you say it with my vampirish accent, it sounds pretty cool. But this is my diary so it’s not like you can hear me say it.

I dare you to try it out loud. Vlad Vulconi.

    See. I told you.

I’m a vampire. Yes, we exist. It was hard for me to even believe it at first. You would think we’d come knowing we’re different than most people, but it doesn’t work that way.

There is a secret to our survival.

We play by the rules, and we don’t get caught. The smart ones, anyway. I like to think I’m smart. I made all A’s in 3rd grade.

And just like Mrs. Hairy said, it’s easy for me to make friends. I do nothing but smile. Don’t know what powers I have yet, but I’m sure they will appear one day. Dad assures me they will.

    Fangs might draw people in.

It might be my charismatic nature. I had to look that word up too. My mom says vampires have ways of persuasion. Wonder if that could work on getting out of homework?

My heart doesn’t beat, but if it did, I’m telling you who it would race for. Sara Howl. Maybe this year I can tell her how I feel.

But that’s our secret. Dad was right. It’s good to have a place to write my thoughts where no one else will see, and if you found this diary, then that means I am dead-dead, and it won’t matter at that point anyway.

    You’ll think it’s a fake story. Keep believing that. I don’t mind. I understand.

He said vampires can get sad being away from the
