    Late into the day, heavy yellow light fell through the blinds and hit my bed sheets in ancient hushes. Outside the window could be anything but wasn't. Could be waves. The way my long-lonely room caught the thick of afternoon, could be bamboo slats in an eastern marketplace. With rivulets of heat and the calls of tropical birds.

    Night would come as a relief. I turned the dial on my radio. The static was warm between stations. Who's got your back? Huffy's Automotive! I twisted the dial. An electric twinge. You know I'll always love you... I was running out of love interests to attach to such lyrics. I grabbed my phone and dialed up Charlotte. A few rings and she answered.

    What are you up to? she asked.

    Just listening to the radio.

    Did you apply to Karter's yet?

    I will in the morning.

    Charlotte inquired just enough to show she cared. She wasn't bossy. She appreciated my interest in audio, radio, old electric devices and useless trinkets, but didn't hesitate to remind me I needed a new source of income.
