    The whole situation was enough to make any self-respecting Engineer take up knitting. The Gustav D was thirty hours out of Liandren V on the Coyvil run when the second set of unexpected trouble showed up.

    The first had been two shifts earlier. Plasma flow through the aft power conduit had destabilized and knocked us out of NE-Space. Diagnostics showed the conduit had been improperly realigned during the last overhaul on Liandren V. Normally this is a dockside job, but when you're six light-years from anywhere…

    We spent back-to-back shifts performing a tricky in-flight realignment. Most of that job is done in real space with power from the singularity chamber to the NE-Space field generators pinched down. I was betting that by the time we finished the captain had received more than one
