About S.R. Marks
Frozen Wasteland
I know you're just a student, but would you like to try a shift at the reference desk?
Jody asked Tina on her third day of work at the library.
Tina loved libraries. She had grown up using the two libraries of this very town, sometimes even this branch. The small library was officially dedicated to the needs of the northern part of her small, but rich, Massachusetts town. They didn't have a large budget, so they used library science graduate students to work as interns for the experience. Sometimes they would have local volunteers, but that was infrequent. Their inability to hire professionals meant there was a fast turnover. One day a librarian would be here and, a week or month later, they were gone. Jody was the only professional, full-time librarian on staff and she had been there for about ten years.
Really?
Tina said. I would love to try a shift. I love the reference desk!
Great, but there are a few ground rules. Are you ready?
Tina pulled out her journal to write on.
First, you're only going to do one-hour shifts for the first couple of weeks. This way we can evaluate if you're a good fit.
Makes sense.
Second, if your hour ends and you aren't done helping someone then you tell your replacement what's going on and they take over.
I feel like that's counterproductive.
Tina said.
That's only until we've evaluated you and you're working more hours at the desk.
Okay, as long as that ends when my trial period's over.
Tina scribbled a note to remind Jody to evaluate her. She was afraid it would be forgotten and she'd never get enough experience.
It will. Third, you need to bring a thick sweater with you on your shifts. Trust me, the library may seem fine right now, but the reference desk is always freezing.
Tina had noticed the librarian at the desk was always wearing a warm sweater, even now, in the summer. She knew it had always been that way. As a child it had been her favorite place to go during hot summer days, but it made it the worst place to be in the winter when it was always cold. The entire building was never warm enough in the winter, but in the summer it was refreshing.
I'm sure it's not that bad right now.
It's freezing.
Jody said. Remember, you'll be sitting there for long periods of time.
Tina's first week at the reference desk was quiet. Jody had been right about the cold. The first day Tina didn't bring any sweater and could see the tips of her fingers turn blue. The second day her sweater wasn't heavy enough and she shivered periodically. By Friday she found a heavy wool sweater her grandmother had knit for her. It became her official reference desk sweater. She was still a bit chilly as she sat for her hour. This was the heaviest sweater she owned, and it wasn't enough.
During her second week she decided to find the source or cause of the cold air. It was mid-summer and comfortable in the rest of the library. It made no sense. First, she looked at the vents and the direction the air blew. She realized the heat was on, not the AC. It was sweltering outside, but inside the heat was set to 75 degrees! Tina wondered how cold the building really was if it had to be kept so high. Even at the reference desk, where all the vents pointed, you couldn't even tell it was that high. There was no way this one spot could be as cold as it was - it defied logic.
One of our students joked that the ghost of a long dead reference librarian always sits at the desk.
Jody said when Tina asked about it.
Well, drafty spots have often incorrectly identified as scientific proof of ghosts. This isn't a drafty spot. Can we move the desk?
No, the desk is built into the floor. There's no way to move it.
Tina's face fell and she tried to think of another solution.
Does that mean you don't want to sit at the desk anymore?
Jody asked.
No! I'll make do. What do you do to keep warm there in the summer?
I have a pair of fleece leggings that I put on before my shift.
Bernard is no longer going to be working at the library.
Jody said to Tina on the following Wednesday.
Bernard? The black guy who was working at the reference desk?
Tina asked.
Jody nodded.
He got a great job offer in Maine and decided to take it.
I thought he had another semester on his degree? He and I were going to graduate at the same time.
Some small-town libraries will hire students who are almost done with their degrees. It's cheaper than someone with years of experience. From the look of it, he'll be the only librarian with a small support staff.
"I guess working here prepared him
