Preface
My name is Luz, and I have ADHD, also known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. I am the mother of three children, two of whom also have been diagnosed with ADHD. For the past sixteen years, I have struggled with this mental condition that affects the majority of my family, and yet was something about which I knew only the bare minimum – simple facts from a brochure at the doctor’s office and whatever a quick Internet search could provide. Most of the time, I functioned each day by doing what came naturally to me, never truly understanding why I did these things.
Despite the stigmas surrounding the label, as well as myths and misconceptions in our society today, as I learn more about ADHD, I am continually intrigued about the nature of this disorder and how the brain works under the diagnostic label of ADHD. I found that I would rather spend my time trying to find ways to make it easier to deal with ADHD and take advantage of its strengths, rather than remain in an endless battle with the challenges that accompany this condition.
When I started to read about the effects of music on the brain, I was fascinated. I learned how it can change the brain’s natural chemistry, and sometimes even improve its structure. That’s when I realized how music has helped me (without me even being aware of what it was doing!) in many situations. For example, I figured out how to use common symptoms and side-effects of ADHD, like hyper-focus, to my advantage by listening to a certain playlist on repeat. I realized that, by figuring out our strengths and creating an environment that supports them, we can begin to excel and thrive.
I’m writing this book because I want to share the techniques I’ve found, the research that supports my findings, and some techniques that have helped my family and I deal with some of the challenges of ADHD in our daily lives.
I hope that my research and experience can be useful for someone who battles with ADHD as well as the loved ones of people like myself.
