Mr. Oily Nose
After my shift at the vet clinic, I pull up outside the Youth Center where my younger brother, Justin, attends summer camp. I park in an available spot and tug up the emergency brake. As I tie my red curls into a quick ponytail, I glance at the time. I’ve got about an hour before I have to be on campus for my first college class.
Plenty of time.
As I’m climbing out, I catch sight of a man sitting at a picnic table tucked under the trees.
Looking like a dad in jeans, T-shirt, flip-flops, and baseball cap, he sits alone. With his feet planted on the ground and his arms propped atop the table, he holds a phone in his hands. To any onlooker, he’s seemingly looking at the screen, possibly scrolling Facebook, Instagram, or the like.
My senses prick to instant alert.
I follow his line of sight and the direction his phone points all the way across the grass and over to the playground attached to the Youth Center. The playground where the kindergarten and first grade students currently play.
