The author has been teaching for many years and has observed on numerous occasions the power of the written word and how it can capture the imagination and interest of children. She says encapsulating children's attention in this way promotes learning both in and out of the classroom.

Chapter 1: The Job
Anthony Ant is an awful lot smaller than the picture of him on the front cover of this book. In fact, Anthony is only around six millimetres in length. Have a check if you have a ruler handy, just to see how small this is. However, Anthony can lift 20 times more than his body weight, so he is very, very strong indeed! Ants are one of the world’s strongest creatures in relation to their size.
Anthony has lots and lots of friends and relatives. He has two brothers, Archie and Alfie, and two sisters, Annabelle and Annette, who are twins. They all live together in a cosy Colony with their mum and dad, Alice and Albert.
It was to be a very exciting day ahead, as Anthony was to be made a ‘Special Soldier’, whose job would be to protect Queen Anastasia. Anthony had been up very early, in preparation to meet the Queen’s Special Advisor, Aaron Ant at 12 p.m. sharp, at the Queen’s private quarters.
There were ten trainee Special Soldiers all waiting to see Special Advisor Aaron Ant. They had all been chosen because they were such good workers in the Colony. Special Advisor Aaron Ant arrived in a very smart uniform but looked a bit scary and official! His beady eyes glanced along the line of trainee Soldier Ants to see how they had presented themselves on this very special day. He greeted all the soldiers and explained in detail what their duties would be.
Anthony listened carefully to all the duties that would be required of him and wrote them down in a small pocket book that he had brought along especially for making important notes. This was so he could read them again later to remind himself and remember the details. Anthony is a very brave and hardworking ant. His name means ‘highly praiseworthy’ and this is certainly true of his character. Anthony always gave his best.
The next day, Anthony was to start his duties with the nine other trainee Special Soldier Ants, to serve and protect Queen Anastasia.
