    It would probably not be fair of me to say that Rohan Kasbekar had always been criminal minded. There must be an age when a child learns to break rules, much as he learns to follow them. For Kasbekar, that age had come early. From our earliest years together, in white uniforms at the Frank Anthony Public School in Lajpat Nagar, there had always been something tedha, something bent, about Kasbekar. If there was wrongful gain to be made, Kasbekar was at it. While Tyagiji never caught him stealing from the Tuck Shop, his pockets were always full of candy. While he never got caught cheating on exams, he cleared every single one without more than a passing acquaintance with the subject. In high school, Kasbekar ran a book on every major sporting event and cleaned up. Everyone knew Kasbekar had the odds, but he never ran into any trouble.

    I lost touch with Kasbekar in the college years. While I went up to Delhi University to study mathematics, Kasbekar was at Jadavpur University in Calcutta. Every now and then, I
