    For the Love of Gnomes

‘T he dopey one on the left. That’s our guy.’

Crouched low behind an azalea bush, her favourite Vans sinking into the mud, Tessa’s gaze zeroed in on the green-capped gnome Noah was pointing to on the other side of the iron-rail fence.

‘The one that looks like he’s drunk a bit too much red cordial?’

‘Yeah, that’s the one.’ The grin in Noah’s voice rivalled the one on the dopey gnome’s face, and Tessa didn’t need to look at her friend to know the faint scar at his temple was twitching like a Ringtail on a power cable; it always did when he was pumped. And right now his body trembled with coiled energy.

    So did hers.

Having Noah this close always had that effect on her. Today, however, it had less to do with his proximity and more to do with the sign bolted to the locked gate they were crouched next to. The words ‘Is there life after death? Jump this fence and let my Doberman help you find out’ had Tessa gnawing the vanilla chapstick off her bottom lip. This was not how she had envisaged spending her spring break.

She snuck a glance in Noah’s direction. He was wearing his Spiderman T-shirt, the one she’d bought him for his eighteenth birthday. Tessa loved how the blue T ramped up the volume in his eyes. She couldn’t decide which she feared for more; the T or the lean, daredevil body it hugged so nicely.

‘Can’t you just give her the one you bought?’ Tessa asked, hating the note of desperation creeping into her voice. She already knew the answer to that question, but the Doberman wasn’t the only reason she wanted to talk him out of this.

Eyes fixed on his bearded target, Noah slid his backpack off his broad shoulders. ‘You’ve read her instructions. I have to steal my way into her heart.’

Steal his way into her heart. Great! How could she have got this so wrong? In all the time Tessa had known him, Noah had never needed to put any effort into getting a girl’s attention.
