Bibliography
Introduction
Chain maille is also called maille or chain mail. It refers to the jewelry or armor made by joining jump rings to each other.
Maille is a French word that means ‘mesh.' To make something using chain maille you will follow steps such as:
● Wrapping a metallic wire around one mandrel and making a coil
● Cutting the coil to make jump rings
● Then linking the rings to one another in a particular pattern using pliers to open and close them
History
Chain maille is amongst the earliest types of metallic armor. It is estimated that the oldest surviving maille armor was made 2700 years ago. It was found in the Celtic warriors' graves. Similar armors were also found in Scythia, which can be dated back to the fifth century B.C.
The armor was lightweight and could resist slashing and piercing. It was commonly used by the Romans, Celts, Persians, Japanese, and the Europeans.
