Learning Indonesian
Hello and welcome to your Indonesian language learning journey!
I hope you are as excited as us to be learning Indonesian. In this series we will cover the fundamentals of Indonesian language. Starting with basic greeting and moving towards more advanced topics. But don’t worry, we’ll walk alongside you so don’t get confused. There is nothing worse than being taught a new language only to be constantly stuck and confused.
Unlike other language books we don’t plan on teaching you countless phrases. Instead we aim to teach you how to form your own sentences by teaching sentence structure and language patterns. We’ve found this way of learning allows students to pick up a language much quicker, which is what we want!
One thing we do recommend is to read this content sequentially and do not skip over any sections. We have designed the section to build on top of each other, there’s no rush! So take your time to fully understand each section before moving on. At the end of each section there will be a short homework to complete.
Follow these steps and you will be speaking Indonesian in no time. And by the end of this series you will be able to communicate with people in Indonesian on a conversational level. Trust me you will be amazed at your results.
Let’s get started ...
Introduction
Indonesian or Bahasa Indonesia is one of the easiest language you can learn.
Why so easy?
Because there is much less grammar in Indonesian than English and sentences do not change due to pronouns and verbs.
––––––––
Let’s take a look at an example:
I play video games
= Saya bermain video games
She plays video games
= Ia bermain video games
See? No need to worry about the changing verbs due to pronouns.
––––––––
Let’s have a look at other examples:
I watch movie
= Saya menonton film
I am watching the movie now
= Saya sedang menonton film sekarang
(now = sekarang)
(watch = menonton, movie = film)
I watched the movie yesterday
= Saya telah menonton film kemarin
(yesterday = kemarin)
I will watch the movie tomorrow
= Saya akan menonton film besok
(tomorrow = besok)
––––––––
Do not worry is you do not know any of the vocabulary, this will be covered in more detail later.
The important thing to notice is that the verb does not change according to the tense. By simply adding some additional information on the sentence like sedang, telah and akan we can change the tense of the sentence.
Now that we know this we can start with the first topic.
Pronouns and Possessive Pronouns
We will start with covering pronouns:
I = Saya (formal),
Aku (informal)
You = Anda (formal),
Kamu (informal) → singular
You = Kalian → plural
She = Dia/Ia
He = Dia/Ia
We = Kami/Kita
They = Mereka
It = Ini
––––––––
Examples
I book a hotel
= Saya memesan sebuah hotel
I book a hotel
= Aku memesan sebuah hotel (formal)
(book = memesan, a hotel = sebuah hotel)
––––––––
He books a hotel
= Dia memesan sebuah hotel
We books a hotel
= Kami memesan
