The day after my father died, I went for a walk on the beach with my brother. We hardly spoke in the cool wintry sunshine, but the rhythm of our footsteps and sound of the waves brought me comfort. What surprised me most, though, was that I didn’t feel alone. I felt as if my father was walking alongside us. Later, much later, and for many months, the tears came.
Living with grief is an
