About this ebook

A CHRISTIAN SUSPENSE SERIES

Raised as poor orphans. Launched into greatness by God. Can they cope with life's changes and keep their home from falling apart?

CEO Ruby Towers and her husband, former Captain Robert Towers, had come a long way from their days growing up at the orphanage. They could hardly believe where their lives had landed. Ruby owned a multinational delivery corporation, and Robert was, well, a very powerful man.

Now far from their humble beginnings as orphans, it seemed the good Lord had more surprises packaged into their future than they ever dreamed.

Presently, as they're raising two children—Ritz, a young lady, and Robert Junior, an infant—enduring sleepless nights with a newborn, along with managing all of life's surprises, was stretching them to the max even though their hands were as blessedly full as their hearts.

Will the weariness pull them down? Or will they see the present maze of their lives through eyes of gratitude and rest in the beauty of God's purpose?

    ONE

    January 20

President-elect of the United States, Robert Towers, stood at full height before the National Mall with the backdrop of tens of thousands of onlookers as he watched the wintry wind wave his beautiful wife, Ruby’s brown curls skyward. Standing next to the ceremonial podium, she held the Bible placed in her hand, waiting for him to plant one palm on the aged Book and to raise the other hand.

Ruby smiled warmly despite the frigid January cold gripping them all and causing him to shiver slightly. As her cool brown eyes met his green ones, her lashes fluttered and his heart bubbled with joy, full of love for her.

Justice Abramson—Chief Justice of the United States—clad in his legal apparel and wig, spun toward Robert. Are you ready, sir?

Smugly, Robert recalled when he was asked that question once—right before leaving for the mission at Aqua a while ago. At the time, his focus had been split between the mission and his family. But today, it wasn’t. Today, everything came together as it should, according to God’s will.

Never in his wildest dreams had he envisioned becoming President. But today, right now, he was being sworn in as the next President of the United States. The moment was surreal to him, except he lived it and memorized every detail of its rare solemnity. Countless months of campaigning, rallies, home visits, debates, and finally the general election—and he’d won fair and square, without controversy. That in itself was a miracle. And now, furthest from his wildest imaginings of who he could ever become, here he stood about to take the oath of office.

Yes. I am. He edged closer to the middle of the podium, nearer her so only a breath of freezing air lingered between them as he placed one hand on the Bible and raised the other. Cheers erupted in the crowd. As the officials readied, he took in the scene behind him. Past Presidents—including his brother, President Jacobson—sat in the front row and flanked both sides of them.

Behind them, were some senators, foreign dignitaries, accomplished citizens, and five orphans from their orphanage. Also seated were his former men from the SSPD. And Pete Zendel and his wife, Patricia, as their guests. Cornelius and Eva were…somewhere there, too, as he was sure he had invited them. Ritz blossomed with joy seated at the front row right next to her uncle, President Jacobson, and they conversed happily. Robert Towers Junior, their son, was being carried by a nanny seated next to Ritz. They planned for the nanny to take him straight to the White House after the swearing-in ceremony to escape the freeze, while Robert and Ruby would continue with the day’s important ceremonies. He knew Ruby’s heart was always with their son too and couldn’t wait to get to him later. But they needed him to get sworn in first.

Repeat after me, the justice instructed. I, Robert Towers…

Robert did so. I, Robert Towers, do solemnly affirm that I will faithfully execute the Office of the President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Ruby beamed with pride while he recited the oath, as she used her free hand to keep her hair from flipping into her eyes.

Robert echoed the justice’s words as the noise of the innumerable crowd stilled to respect the moment’s solemnity. So help me God. Amen, he concluded.

The justice shook his hand firmly. Congratulations, Mr. President.

Both the dignitaries on the stage and the crowd rose to their feet to applaud and cheer, while some waved their flags and others whistled. Congratulations, Orphan President! someone shouted, leading Robert to smile. It seemed the nickname had stuck.

Fulfilling protocol, Robert shook hands with each of the past Presidents in attendance. When he reached his brother, former President Brett Jacobson, he became overwhelmed and hugged him. I’m here because of you. You believed in me. Thank you, Brett.

Brett patted his back. I love you, Robby. Do a good job. We’re all counting on you, his brother’s broken voice managed.

Robert nodded and straightened. By God’s grace, I will. He moved along to the other dignitaries and shook hands with them before he could lose his cool composure. His navy-blue coat fluttered in the wind as he made his way past each row until he needed to return to the front of the stage.

He kissed Ruby and hugged her. I love you, Red. I’m going to make this journey worth it for us. So help me God. He inched apart and gazed into her lovely brown eyes.

I know you will, God helping you. I’m proud of you, Robert. She gave him a slight shove and blinked back a tear. Now, go and address the people. They’re waiting to hear from their new President. She clapped and made her way back to her seat, her elegant heels clicking as she went. The manner in which she’d worked very hard and regained her shape post-baby, while campaigning with him, floored him. He
