Foreword
I n Psalm 139, David, king of Israel, wrote about the Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth and everything that exists, especially mankind. The concept of a man emanating from a woman’s womb is far beyond the imagination of all those who ponder this great event. David makes it very clear that the Creator is an awesome being who created mankind in His own image and is involved in the human experience. David also was aware that mankind is the prize possession in the creation process and sits at the pinnacle of God’s handiwork. This alone speaks volumes to all the souls who meditate upon this reality. As the psalmist stated, This knowledge is too wonderful for me to obtain.
David knew that the concept of creation was beyond human comprehension.
After meditating on the omniscience and omnipotence of the Lord, David immediately shouted out, I will praise you, because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
King David worshipped and acknowledged God for creating him in a way that inspired praise. If the psalmist was grateful that he had been created by God, and he celebrated this truth, shouldn’t we too—as human beings—praise and celebrate the fact that God made us? We should be in awe of what God has done for humanity. We should be amazed by His handiwork. I believe that David was aware of the power of human beings and the indwelling spirit that is part of our makeup, but complete understanding was beyond his reach—both spiritually and intellectually.
When we have questions about life’s design and the makeup and function of mankind, I believe we should approach this matter as the psalmist did—through meditation, song, prayer, and study. The very essence of life lies within and is discovered when we know the Creator, about ourselves and others, and that we are more powerful
