Home to around 440,000 Tallinners, Tallinn is where Eastern Europe meets the Nordic region. During the summer months, the sun doesn't set until after 10pm, and for a short while it doesn't even get completely dark. During the winter months, you'll only get 6-7 hours of daylight with highs that may or may not get above 0 Celsius. It's home to more startups per capita than anywhere else on the continent, with a few success stories including Skype, Transferwise, and Bolt (formerly Taxify).
First settled several thousand years ago, the city was conquered by the Danish in 1219 and named Reval. Christianity was forced upon the locals, and by 1285 the city became part of the Hanseatic League, an alliance of Northern European cities. From the 14th to the 16th centuries, the city became a major trade hub, and in 1561 it became a dominion of Sweden. Imperialist Russia fought a decades-long Great Northern War from 1700 to 1721, and Reval eventually came under Russian rule.
