Budapest has something for everyone, no matter your interests or tastes.
It's perhaps the best sign of a tourist-friendly city to say there really is something for everyone. Foodie? Check. Here to appreciate the art and culture? Check. Nightlife? Double check. Trying to stick to a budget? Check. Ready to splurge? Check. Family-friendly options? Check. Want to go wild? Check. You get the idea. Boo-da-pesht is how it's pronounced, and Budapest is ready for you.
The city started as a Celtic settlement that became a Roman military settlement named Aquincum, and eventually the Roman capital of the region. (Though it's not part of this itinerary, it's well-preserved, easy to reach by public transportation, and a worthy half-day trip.) By the end of the 9th century, Magyar tribes settled in and displaced the former Bulgarian settlers from Buda and Pest, then turned the area into the Kingdom of Hungary. After an attempted invasion a few centuries later, a reinforced stone wall was built around the cities, with the royal palace built in Buda's hills.
