    We haul our backpacks ashore and turn back. The shuttle boat is already heading westwards, back to civilization, its wake cleaving the tranquil blue of the Altevatnet, Norway's largest lake north of the Polar Circle. The deafening noise of the high-powered outboard engine is ebbing away. I feel as if I have not truly arrived: yesterday still hurrying through a hot Munich summer day, just now breathing the fresh air of a subarctic autumn morning at one of the remotest places of all Europe. The glistening yellow of the mountain birches, the vivid orange of the dwarf shrubs and the glowing red of the blue berry leaves dazzle my eyes. A
