Usually this part of the book thanks people the author couldn’t do without. The fact is, I could have written all this and more without any of these others, but I wouldn’t have wanted to. This hardy group of writers and readers have been my fellow students, mentors, critics and friends, all in ten short weeks. And I have never met any of them in person.

So, thank you, and adieu: Stephanie, Jodie, Kate and Kate, Bill, Hanela, Kristyna, Adina, David, Takasu and Jayanti.

And for letting us all be honest with each other; for your own personal, pithy, honest comments and support; our course tutor: Amal Chatterjee.

Write on and live longer, my friend.

Once again its usual thanks to partners. My wife hated me doing this course - I was up late at night writing assignments and stories: up later still reading and commenting on fellow students’ works and feedback.

But, she's stayed with me throughout, and for that, and so much more, well, you know the rest...

    About This Book

It’s not that I've always wanted to write. I've always written. The time has come in my life when I must publish. If only because I like some of the stories and the way they sound, and think others might too. I can assure you these stories have written themselves. As Stephen King teaches - stories arrive fully formed; you just dig them out of the ground and polish or dust off a bit of dirt. Some dirt you leave behind.

This book is the direct result of a course I completed online through Oxford University. Each piece is a brief assignment. If you want to know the ins and outs and whys of each work then read on, else skip to the stories.

All I can promise you is their explanations are as true as the stories themselves. Cross my heart. Hope to write.

    I love the sound
