    Lesson #1: July 7, 2019

    Letting Our Light Shine

    Lesson Passage: Matthew 5:13–20

    NRSV

"YOU are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

14 "You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid.

15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.

16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.

18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.

19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."

    Today’s Lesson Story

Jesus liked to share His messages by comparing ordinary objects to parts of the Christian life. One day, Jesus was speaking to a crowd about how Christians should live and compared the Christian life to salt and light. He told the people they were to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

Do you like pretzels? Pretzels taste better when there is salt that sticks to the outside. Without salt, the pretzel would taste very bland because salt gives food more flavor. In Jesus’ story, He compared the salt that flavors and changes food to the way His presence can change our lives. Also, salt makes us thirsty. A person who follows Jesus is like salt because others experience His presence, which in turn makes them ‘thirsty’ for God, too. On the other hand, if we lose our ‘saltiness,’ we no longer have anything to share with others that would bring them to Jesus. This makes us bland for God’s purpose.

Jesus not only asks us to be the salt of the earth, but He also calls us to be the light of the world. Are you afraid of the dark? The first thing a person usually does when he walks into a dark room is turn on a light. If someone puts a bowl or basket over the light, what happens to the light? In this story, Jesus answered that very question. He said it is much better to keep the light uncovered (not hidden), so that it can give light to everyone in the room. In the Bible, Jesus called Himself the Light of the World (John 8:12). Just as the uncovered light shines so we can see where to go, Jesus, the Light of the World, guides us and shows us how to live a life that glorifies
